Web browsers

  • WorldWideWeb Web Browser

The WorldWideWeb Browser, built just a year before the release of the World Wide Web in 1991, was the first ever web browser used by anybody.
  • Mosaic is released

Mosaic was not so much a web browser, but more of an extension to the WorldWideWeb browser which made it more efficient and easy to use.
  • Netscape Navigator

A year later, the creators of mosaic released the netscape navigator. At it's peak, the netscape navigator was used by 90% of web users, far more popular than the default WorldWideWeb browser.
  • Internet Explorer

The first browser war had started between the netscape navigator and the new internet explorer, as microsoft released their own web browser, which became quite successful, as it was bundled with all new microsoft computers as a default.
  • The Mozilla Foundation

To compete with internet explorer, those responsible for the netscape navigator founded the Mozilla Foundation, which eventually became Firefox. Their Firefox browser is arguably superior to internet explorer and is still used to this day.
  • Apple's Safari

Safari was Apple's attempt at a web browser, and upon release it did fairly well, similarly because of why internet explorer succeeded, it was pre-packaged into every Apple product. It held 7% market share at it's release.
  • Google Chrome

Google Chrome, now the world's most popular web browser with almost 50% market share, was released in 2008, and since then has gained massively in popularity. With constant updates and improvements, google chrome has exploded to the top of market share in recent years, and this looks to remain true for some time.
