President Washington signed the treaty to keep peace between the U.S and Great Britain long enough for the U.S to rearm themselves. The treaty was created to solve problems between the two nations and keep peace, but it really didn't do much of that. -
Chesapeake- leopard affair
the USS Chesapeake was stopped by the British fleet to recover deserters. several were injured during the British seizure.The Americans were furious about this and war fever raged up and down the coast. -

The embargo Act was passed by congress and signed by President Thomas Jefferson to prohibit all American ships from trading in all foreign ports.
