    US declares war
    The British Parliament signed into law the Orders of Council which put a blockade on ports. In addition the the Orders of Council, the British refused to stop impressment and Americans believed that the Bitish Canadians were riling up the Indians and causing conflict. These things angered the Americans and eventually pressure from the War Hawks in Congress cause James Madison to sign the United States declaration of war.

    Attack on New York
    This battle consisted of the Americans defending New York against the British. Americans landed west of York on the 27th of April and met enemies, Indians. American forces led by Pike were able to beat back the Indian forces that had showered them with bullets as they came ashore. Although it was somewhat of an easy win for the Americans it came at a cost for the amount of men lost during the fight.

    The Americans had a victory at the Battle of Lake Erie and it cut off the British supply lines and forced them to abandon Detroit. At first The British fleet of 6 ships was destroying the slightly lager American fleet. Eventually the British destroyed the Lawerence, which then caused Oliver Hazard Perry to move over to the Niagara. During his move over to the Niagara he took the American flag. Because of him taking the flag he put hope back into the troops and America started winning the war

    British burn Buffalo
    On a burning rage, British forces led by General Gordon Drummond had previously burned York and Newark before setting their sights on Buffalo. The British then crossed the Niagara River with 1,000 soldiers and overtook the American force of 2,000 soldiers because the American soldier were not as experienced. The British then set flame to the city of Buffalo. The entire city was destroyed, however the people of Buffalo began to rebuild within a week of the burning.

    British troops marched into Washington D.C. during The War of 1812 and set fire to most of the public buildings there. Admiral Cockburn, who directed to attack, personally set fire to the White House. The attack on Washington was the last success of the British before they were confronted by General Smith, an American militia officer, when they attempted to take Baltimore.

    A British officer lead an army of troops through Canada into New York. British troops engaged in skirmishes with Americans on the way to Plattsburgh. A large British fleet sailed to Thomas Macdonough who was waiting at Lake Champlain. In the end after a few hours the Birtish surrendured.

    Francis Scott key Writes the First Lines to the Star Spangled Banner
    Francis Scott Key was a lawyer from Georgetown, a small port and Northern suburb of the U.S. in 1814. Key saw the American flag still flying high the morning after the destruction of Fort McHenry. At the is time he thought of the first few verses of The Star Spangled Banner, which was to become America's National Amthem.

    The Treaty of Ghent was signed by British and American representatives at Ghent, Belgium. The treaty stated that all conquered territory was to be returned, and commissions were planned to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada. This treaty successfully ended the War of 1812.
