Violence and the Civil Rights Movement

  • Emmett Till

    A little boy was killed for saying something to a white woman after buying a piece of candy. This was important to African Americans because it showed how white people hated them for the littest reasons.
  • President Eisenhower and the Troops

    A group of African American children known as "Little Rock Nine" were set into going to a school full of whites, they didn't want the blacks there so they did everything to get them out but it didn't work, President Eisenhower seen it was terrible thing and sent Natonal Troops in the protect the 9 students to and from school. This was important to African Americans because it showed how they couldn't receive an education because of the hatred of whites.
  • Mack Charles Parker

    Mack Parker was put in jail by being accused of raping a white pregnant woman, he then was taken out of his jail cell by a group of white men. They had beaten him and shot him twice. This was important to African Americans because it showed how white people would work together to kill a black man and no one would ever do anything.
  • Freedom Riders Attacked

    The first freedom riders bus, The Greyhound was attacked by 8 KKK members. They cut the tires and set it on fire and held the doors shut so none could get out. Police chiefs, Bull Connor and Tom Cook stood by and let them do it them signaled them off. This was important to African Americans because it showed how the people who are suppose to help you (police) let a thing like that happen.
  • William Lewis Moore

    Moore was basically the mailman of the civil war. He was known for writing letters to people who could make a change and personally giving them the letters himself. He was shot twice by a man whom he had aruged down earlier. This was important to African Americans because it's a white man caring for the rights of black people.
  • The Birmingham Incident

    The SCLC thought if they'd use children in a protest it would make them have a change in heart, but it didn't. Bull Connor was angry and enraged by tactic with fire hoses that were full force that made skin rip off the bodies and dogs that attacked them. This was important to African Americans because it showed them that they couldn't even march for their rights without being attacked.
  • Medgar Evers

    Civil Rights Leader was shot in the back because he was black and helping to get rights for his people. This was important to African Americans because one of their strongest civil rights leader was killed.
  • 16 Street Church Bombing

    Four girls. Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Denise McNair. Was In the basement of the Church when a bomb set off. This was important to African Americans because it was four little girls going to Church to study and out of no where a bomb shatters.
  • Mississippi Workers

    James Earl Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were killed by KKK members while working on a project called "Freedom Summer" it was aiming for African Americans to vote and this is one of the reasons the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed. This was important to African Americans because three men were killed because they wanted African Americans tto have the right to vote.
  • Jamie Lee Jackson

    Jackson was a civil rights protestor who was shot by an Alabama State Troop trying to protect his mother. This was important to African Americans because it organized the first Selma to Montgomery march.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King

    Dr. King was shot at the Lorraine Motel. No one actually knows why he was killed but it was said that he was killed because of how powerful he was during the civil rights movement. Everyone envyed him. This was important to African Americans because the leader of the civil rights movement was killed, every law was passed because he was such a great and powerful man.
