    Later in May, President Nixon announces a series of large scale bombing raids on North Vietnam; some raids consist of up to 120 warplanes. It is the first significant attack since his predecessor, President Johnson declared a bombing halt in the fall of 1968.By the end of the year U.S. troop strength has declined to 334,600, with 44,245 casualties.

In May Nixon orders the mining of Haiphong harbor.
