    There was compromise between the North and the South over slavery that failed. Victories at Vicksburg and Gettysburg, the North defeated the South after years of fighting. Lincoln decided that it was time for the Emancipation Proclamation. There were different ideas with President Lincoln, moderate republicans, and Radical republicans about how to rebuild the South and to secure the rights of African Americans.

    Settling the West

    Populations were large enough to qualify for statehood due to mining and ranching that attracted settlers to western territories. The homestead act encouraged settlers to move to the Great Plains. Life was difficult but they discovered that wheat could grow in the Great Plains. Settlers entered Native American lands and the government tried to force Native Americans onto reservations.

    Industrialization

    American business and industry grew rapidly after the end of the civil war. Major railroads that included the transcontinental railroad. Huge profits that were made, led to some corruption. Large corporations developed that could consolidate business functions and produce goods. Workers tried to perform in the late 1800's to improve wages, hours, and working conditions. Many strikes in the era led to violence.

    Urban America

    Immigrants settled in cities and new immigrants would not adapt to American culture or may be harmful to American society. Native Americans and immigrants were drawn to cities by the jobs in America's growing industries. Industrialization of the US led to art and literature and ideas about government. Falling crop prices and deflation made it hard for farmers to make a living after the Civil War. Southern state began passing laws after reconstruction.

    In the late 1800's new markets, increase trade, and build a powerful Navy caused the US to be more involved in international affairs. The US defeated Spanish troops in Cuba and the Philippines during the Spanish- American war. President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt disputes in Asia & Latin America and acquired the Panama Canal Zone.

    Americans tried to improve their society during the Progressive Era. They tried to make gov. honest, efficient, and democratic. Theodore Roosevelt extended the federal gov. ability to curb the power of business & conserve natural resources. Woodrow Wilson won the election of 1912. He supported low tariffs, regulation of business, & creation of federal reserve banking.

    World War I and It's Aftermath

    Militarism, alliances, imperialism, & nationalism led to World War I in Europe. The American gov. used progressive ideas & new gov. agencies to mobilize the pop. & economy. Technology caused both sides to lose millions of men during the war. The peace treaty set the stage for another war to come. America's victory over seas led to turmoil at home and the end of wartime economy led to depression & fear of communism, strikes, riots, & bombings.

    Warren G. Harding's administration suffered corruption & scandals. Widespread ownership of automobiles, radios, & other innovations changed how Americans lived in the 1920's. The roaring 20's was a decade that seemed to be one long party in the 1920's. In the 1920's there was an Era of artistic innovation. Popular culture also changed. The Harlem Renaissance was a creative Era for African American artists & writers.

    The Great Depression Begins

    The 1920's were prosperous, speculation in the stock market, risky lending policies, overproduction & uneven income distribution. Large numbers of people to lose their jobs & property was because of the Great Depression. Hoover tried to fix the economy by providing loans to banks & corporations by starting public work projects.

    World War I was aggressive & expansionist governments took power in Europe & Asia. Britain & France wanted to avoid another bloody conflict. Nazi's acted their racist ideology when they imposed restrictions on Jews & stripped them of basic rights. The US remained officially neutral but aided Great Britain & its fight against Germany as World War II began.

    Aggressive & expansionist gov. took power in Europe & Asia in the years following World War I. In the late 1930's World War I loomed in the large minds of Nazi Germany appeared aggressive, Britain & France. Nazis acted their racist when they imposed restrictions on Jews & stripped them of basic rights. World War II began, the US remained neutral but aided Great Britain is in its fight against Germany.

    Roosevelt and the New Deal

    In 1932 Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president. He followed a promise of a "new deal" for Americans. He introduced major pieces of legislation in 1935. They created Works Progress Administration, National Labor Relations Board, & Social Security Administration. Roosevelt won a landslide reelection in 1936.

    America returned to isolationism after World War I. Armed forces ranked 19th when the nation entered World War II in 1941. The Battle of Midway was a major turning point against the Japanese. Women & African Americans gained new work opportunities, Latinos & Japanese Americans faced violence in American cities. British & American troops won victories over the Axis in North & Italy. In both Europe & the pacific during 1945 led to the defeat of the Axis powers.

    The Cold War Begins

    After the war ended, tensions continued to rise over the amount of freedom the Soviets were going to allow the nations they controlled. President Truman worked to contain communism by supporting Greece, Iran, & West Germany. The gov. tried to root out Communists in gov. Eisenhower believed in developing a new technology to deliver nuclear weapons would help prevent war.

    Postwar era, Congress limited the power of unions & rejected most of Truman's plan for a "fair deal". The 1950's was a time for affluence with new technological breakthroughs. 20% of the American population, people of color & those living in the inner cities & Appalachia.

    After World War II, African Americans & other civil rights supporters challenged segregation in the US. The struggle for civil rights intensified in the early 1960's. Much progress had been made in the arena of civil rights by the mid 1960's.

    Most Americans knew little about Indochina, France's colony in Southeast Asia in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Many Americans began to protest against the war. President Nixon moved to end the nations involvement in the Vietnams war.

    The most tumultuous decades in American history was in the 1960's. Many women had become increasingly dissatisfied with society's perception of women & their place in society. Mexican Americans & Mexican immigrants lived in the Southwest where they faced discentury.

    Presidential election campaign of 1960, John F Kennedy promised to move the nation into the New Frontier. Ongoing tensions with the Soviet Union led to crisis over Cuba & West Berlin during the Kennedy Administration. Lyndon B Johnson decades of experience in Congress & was skilled in getting legislation enacted.
