Mexican American War
President James K polk wanted the territory of Texas all to himself. He offered Mexico 15 million for all of Mexico but Mexico refused. He then sneds troops to Texas and the Mexicans attack Americna troops because they were on their territoy. this begins the Mexican AMerican War, After the war, America gets so much land and do not know how to divide it between slave and free state. -
Compromise of 1850
This billw as to try to get rid of the problem with the new territories whetaher they were slave or free states. They came up wih plan where Texas will be a free state, and the rest fo the territory accquired form Mexico will ecide, popular soverignty. This also included the Fugitive SLave ACt, which stated that anyone who tried to help a runaway slave would be punished. A runaway slave should not be helped but rather returned to their owner. -
Uncle Tom's cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe, wrote this book about a family f slaves who try to escape slavery from the south. It depicted how slavery was in the south. This enfuriated the northenrs who wnated to abolish slavery once and for all. The Southern staes banned this book and called it propaganda. In the end, many disputed over this book and Abraham Lincoln said to her "You must be the little lady who created this war" -

Ths act was to make Nebraska and Kansas chose whether they wated tobe a slave or free state. This was calle dopulars overgnty. Southerners sent their people to live in Kansas so when they vote Kansas eocmes a slave state. The nrothenres did the same thing in both states. -

This is when Brown and a group of Northenres decide to attack Kansas and the people who were forslavery. Brown attacked and set fire to the popel home.. Brown was seen as a terrorist by the south and a hero to the north. -
Dred Scott decision
Dred Scott decision was when Dred Scott went to the Supreme Court todispute wheter he is stil a slave or not. His owner took him to a free state and they needed to decide whether Dred Scott was still a slave. Dred Scott was loses and he is considered property. He should not have even been taken to trial. This angers many northenrers. -
Election of 1860
Lincoln is elected to beocme president of the United States. This enfuriates the Suth, since Lincoln was agaist slavry. This would cause the seccession and be the last straw for the South. -
First secession
After the election of Lincoln is finalized, the first states to secede was South Carolina. AFter this state secedes, many states will follow. they join together to formt he Confederate States of America. -

The 13, 14, 15 ammendaments
The 13 ammendament was ratified on April 8, 1864. and it abolished slavery compeltely. The 14th amendamnet gave eveyrone born in the US rights, and made them American citizens. The 15 ammendament was rattified on 1868, and this allowed evey man to vte no amtter the race. -

ABraham goes to a theater and Booth shoots him in the back of the ehad. Johnson enters presidency. -
Impeachment of Johnson
Johnson was impeached after he fired his cabient memeber. he didnt get congresses approval first. this angered cogress and they impeachedhim. Johnson needed one more vote to be kicked out of office, but he didnt. -
Compromise of 1877
This was when Rutherford becomes the President on the condition that all deocrats will retrn to congress, and that all trops be left from the OSuthern states. This ends reconsturciton period.
