  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave law was basically an act of compromise between the North and the South. The law was that any run away slave had to be returned. This took away their legal rights, like the right to a jury trial. The problem was that any black person can be sent back south, even if they were free, if someome claimed to own them. This law enraged the Northerners which then wanted slavery abolished even more.

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin Published

    Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was an anti slavery book published by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Stowe wrote the book in reaction to the Fugitive Slave Act. In 3 months it had already sold 300,000 copies. According to Abraham Lincoln, her book made a very big impact which led to the war.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by congress on May 30, 1854. It made people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to have slavery. This act also repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which meant slavery was north of the latitude 36 deg 30'. It angered the North but the south supported it. After the law was passed, people from the north and south rushed to Kansas to try and affect the outcome of the votes for the election.

    The Election of 1860
    The Election of 1860 included Abraham Lincoln, John Bell, Stephen A. Douglas, and John C. Breckinridge. During this election, one of these men would become president. It was a very important election because people mostly voted on the president that either supported slavery or didn't like it, since that was the biggest issue at the time. Soon Abraham Lincoln will be elected and lead the civil war.

    The Battle at Fort Sumter
    The Battle of Fort Sumter lasted form April 12 to April 14, 1861. On the morning of April 12, confederate soldiers opened fire on the fort. The fire of bullets was defintely meant for the Union soldiers, since they attacked, it was the beginning and first battle of the Civil War.

    The Monitor vs Merrimack
    This was a naval battle during the Civil War. The north made a steam frigate called the Merrimack. The south had the Monitor. The Merrimack was commanded by Commodore Franklin Buchanan. During the battle, the pilothouse was hit, making the north the winner.
  • The Battle of Shiloh

    The Battle of Shiloh
    The battle of Shiloh was also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. This battle occured on the day of April 6 when 40,000 Confederate soldiers attacked union soldiers that were nearby and at Tennessee River. The Union lasted the night so the next day, the were joined by 40,000 more soldiers and the Confederates were overpowered by the Union.

    The Emancipation Proclamation
    On January 1, 1863 Abraham Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation. It was then the third year of the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation announced that all slaves in the rebellious states are now free. However, it did not end all slavery in the end, but it helped people make the change.

    The Battle of Gettysburg
    The Battle of Gettysburg lasted from July 1 to July 3. It is considered the most importnant event between the North and South in the Civil War. The Confederates were led by General Robert E. Lee and the Union was led by General George G. Meade. On the last day Lee ordered a "Pickett's Charge" but failed, he then withdrawed his army toward Virginia.

    The 13th Amendment
    After the war, slavery had finally ended because of a new amendment. On January 31, 1865 Congress passed the 13th amendment which abolished slavery in the United States. It was ratified in the US in December.
  • Surrender at Appomattox

    Surrender at Appomattox
    Robert E Lee and General Grant agreed to meet on April 9 1865 in the house of Wilmer McLean in the villiage of appomattox courthouse. They spoke for a couple hours and then Lee agreed to sign the surrneder, ending the Civil War.
  • Assassination of President Lincoln

    Assassination of President Lincoln
    On April 14 John Wilkes booth shot and killed President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was shot in a theatre during a play at Washington D.C.. This was only 5 days after surrender that ended the war. When Lincoln was shot in the back of the head, he did not die immediately, the doctors had said that there was no saving him and that he would die during the night.
