  • Gag Resolution

    Prohibited debate or action on antislavery appeals. It was passed every year for eight years until it was overturned by the help of John Quincy Adams.
  • Mexican War

    Due to disputes over the Texas and Mexican border, James Polk sent armed American troops to Texas. The troops cross the Texas border to Mexico and violate the Mexican region. Congress declred war on Mexico.
  • Free Soil Party

    Antislavery party in the 1848 and 1852 elections that opposed the extension of slavery into the territories
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    This treaty ended the war with Mexico. The treaty confirmed Texas stretching along to Oregon and the California coast as American territory.
  • Gadsden Purchase

    Acquired additional land from Mexico for $10 million to facilitate the construction of a southern railroad.
  • Kansas-Nevraska Act

    Repealed two compromises, the 1820 compromise and the 1850.
