    Archduke Ferdinand and Sophie were killed by a Serbian nationalist who believed their land was being taken by Austria-Hungary as an act of power.

    Lusitania, a cruise ship that was sunk by Germany. On-board were U.S. citizens and ammunition for the war.

    Germany sent submarines and other naval ships to attack and build a blockade stopping neutral countries from delivering food, textiles and other exports to the countries involved in the war.

    A secret message to Mexico from Germany that had been intercepted and given to the U.S.. The Telegram was asking Mexico to join the Central Alliance and agree to attack the U.S. if the U.S. entered the war. In return, Mexico would regain some of the land they lost in the war with America.

    The U.S. entered the war on the allies side. General Pershing led more than 2 million soldiers to fight the battlefields in France. With our joining the war women were given a new role in the American government and job force.

    Over 9 million soldiers and the same amount of civilians died in the war. Germany and Russia suffered the most losing almost 2 million men in battle. Large amounts of land were completely destroyed and could not be used for farming for years. Germany and Great Britain were broke and had to raise taxes to obtain money from their citizens. Inflation was on the rise. The economies were sent into a tailspin. However, because the U.S. entered the war late they remained economically strong.

    World War 1 officially ended when they signed the Treaty of Versailles. The allied powers got together and decided what the consequences should be for the losers of the war. There were 15 parts that included changing lines between countries and playing money to the people to that were hurt. All of the consequences were never paid by Germany.

    Germany's Weimar Republic was falling further and further in debt with no chance at meeting the demands of the Treaty of Versailles. An American named Dawes came up with a plan for Germany to make payments over time starting with low payments that would increase each year as the economy hopefully improved. Unfortunately, this plan needed to be stretched out further and therefore, the Young Plan became the solution.

    Great Depression
    After the war, American celebrated with the Roaring 20's. The government did not take into account that the soldiers were going to come back home and need jobs which meant the women would lose theirs. Countries that we were exporting goods to did not have the money to pay for them, so farmers went further and further into debt. The American people were deceived by the government and continued to take out loans they couldn't afford. Soon the American people could not afford to eat either.

    Germany wan in an economic depression and looking for a hero. The people of the Weimar Republic lost confidence in their government. It was time for Hitler to become the new leader. Hitler rose to power by being a powerful speaker full of confidence. He promised a better life for the unemployed, middle class and the young people. He was going to make them a world power once again.
