  • Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

    Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
    Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austrian throne and his wife, were assassinated by Serbian named Gavrilo Princip, who was a terrorist that was in a group named the Black Hand. The death of Ferdinand and his spouse caused the Austrians to blame Serbia as a whole. This ultimately is the reason that started World War 1, which Canada was pulled into.

  • Britain declares war on Germany

    Britain declares war on Germany
    On August 4th 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany, Britain, led by Prime Minister Herbert Asquith, had given Germany an ultimatum to get out of Belgium by midnight of August 3rd. However when Germany failed to do so Britain declared war. Since Canada was a colony of Britain during this time Canada was forced to take part of this war. This war caused Canada of course to lose many individuals and loved ones, in the venture fighting for their country.

    Many artists and photographers during this time at war, had a chance to show the world the essence of war and the dangers that the men and women involved in had to face. . However, this gave these artists somewhere to get start their career, publicize their work and themselves. This was a progress, but mainly only for artists as they got to publicize their name and work, even though there was fear and stress during this time there were jobs for the painters.

    Francis Pegahmagabow
    Francis was a First nation Canadian soldier, a very good sniper, and fighter, therefore, he went up in the rankings. He was respected throughout the army and was a role model for his fellow companions. Although Francis was rewarded with awards and was respected, the same respect wasn't shown for the other First Nations, they were treated unfairly and not even considered a Canadian citizen.

    War Measures Act
    The War Measures Act was a statute of the Parliament of Canada that provided for the declaration of war and the types of emergency measures that could thereby be taken. This act insured the safety of full Canadians by imprisoning/limiting Canadians freedom who were born in the enemy countries like Ukraine and Germany. However, these Canadians that they put in camps were forced to work hard labor, weren't a threat. I believe there could have been a better way to deal with this.

    The Battle of Vimy Ridge was the first time when all 4 Canadian divisions fought on the same battle, which led to a victory. Canada demonstrated that they were on of the outstanding formations on the western front and masters of offensive warfare.In this battle they made history and captured the most land, ground, prisoners, and guns than any other previous battles. Winning the Battle of was a historical moment for Canada because it made Canada become a nation of its own.

    This incident occurred in December when two ships collided, a French boat carrying munitions headed for Europe collided with another ship that was carrying dangerous materials and exploded in Halifax. This created the worlds largest man made explosion, which the blast killed over 1,950 people immediately, and injured thousands more and destroyed most of this city.

    Mac Belle Sampson and Nurses
    Nurses like and Sampson died being heroes. These nurses risked their lives to help the thousands of injured soldiers who were fighting for Canada. They aided and nursed the sick and helped them feel better and proved to people that women can do a lot more than just stay at home, it changed the way women were treated. The nurses made a difference and helped save so many lives. Sampson and women in general all gave examples of what women can do by helping people and being very brave.

    Winnipeg General Strike
    The Building and Metal Trades Councils in Winnipeg voted to go on strike. They asked for 3 things: Decent wages ($0.85/hr)
    an eight-hour days
    the right to bargain collectively for better working conditions.
    This strike quickly became a general strike and was now under the direction of the Central Strike Committee. A crowd gathered to protest the arrests of the strike leader and the Police started attacking them causing the death of 1 person and 30 injured.

    In 1921, a large number of the North American population had diabetes. In late 1922, Frederick Banting, a Ontario doctor, along with other medical researchers, discovered a treatment for diabetes - insulin. This was a medical breakthrough achieved by Canadians. Insulin was effective in treating diabetes patients and the death toll from the illness decreased.

    Coal mining workers went on strike because of the terrible working conditions they faced. Many times they would work for the time they were suppose to but at the end of the week they weren't sure if they would get paid or not.They couldn't quit because that would mean losing possible income for their family. With this happening, it left most workers very upset and they all wanted better conditions.Therefore they stopped working and went against the government.

    The Balfour Report was brought to the attention in the Imperial Conference. This resulted in Canada and the other Dominions being declared self-governing and independent. This was the beginning of Canada's independence from Britain and achieving autarchy.

    The Persons Case established women as persons under Canadian law. This legal change was fought for many years by a group of women named "The Famous Five". This meant that women would have the rights that the constitution laid out for people in Canada, whereas only men had rights. This set the groundwork for women all across Canada, and despite discrimination still existing, especially towards non-white women, after all this case has made women be more comfortable and free.
