Timeline of Tugun

  • Farrell Family

    The Farrell Family establish a camp site south of Currumbin Hill, clearing land for grazing paddocks for their small dairy herd and a home.
  • Establishment of Railway Roads

    A railway from north of Nerang to Tweed Heads was constructed, providing a means of economic connection with Brisbane, providing opportunity fro dairy farmers in the Currumbin area to send their cream to butter factories up north.
  • Official Naming of Tugun

    Tugun, translating to "sea waves" in an Aboriginal dialect originating from north Brisbane. was favoured by the Post Master General and Lands Department as the official name.
  • Establishment fo Rail Stop

    The Farrell family requested for a rail stop to allow for them to load their produce and send them to Brisbane by train.
  • First Home

    In 1916 the first home was constructed when land near the beach were divided into allotments for auction.
  • Coastal Road

    A coastal road was then constructed from Coolangatta to Southport in the 1920s.
  • Seaside Hotel

    F.S. Charles constructed the Seaside Hotel which proved to be a significant landmark for Tugun.
  • Tugun SLSC

    The Establishment of Tugun Surf Life Saving Club occurred in 1925, boasting elite athletes and strong competitive history.
  • Management of Seaside Hotel Changed

    The Diamond family took over management of the hotel I 1926. A little later the hotel was burnt to the ground and rebuilt at the cost of 14000 Pounds after Paddi Diamond purchased the site and rebuilt it.
  • Coolanagatta Aiport

    The Coolangatta Airport was created with the purpose of providing some form of emergency landing ground for the airmail aircrafts often transiting between Sydney and Brisbane.
  • Current Terminal Initially Opened

    The current terminal today was opened and the runway lengthened to 2042 metres.
  • John Flynn Private Hospital

    On the 23rd of November, 1993, the John Flynn Private Hospital was opened and named in honour of Reverend Dr John Flynn.
  • 99 Year Lease of Airport

    Gold Coast Airport Ltd (GCAPL) acquired 99 year lease of airport from the Federal Government on 28 May 1998.
  • Renamed Gold Coast Airport

    IN 2003, during a change in ownership from GCAPL to QAL, the name was changed from Coolangatta Airport to Gold Coast Airport.
  • Gold Coast Airport $100 Million Redevelopment

    QAL celebrated the opening of the new $100 million passenger terminal redevelopment at Gold Coast Airport.
    Gold Coast Airport named Australia’s Major Airport of the Year at the Australian Airports Association (AAA) Aviation Excellence Awards.Gold Coast Airport named Australian Airports Association – Major Airport of the Year.
  • Draft of Major Development Plan

    Gold Coast Airport release preliminary draft Major Development Plan proposing the installation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the airport.
