The expedition of English Lieutenant James Cook aboard the HMS Endeavour mapped the east coast and claimed it for the British crown. -

First colony built in Sydney Cove
Early in the morning, Captain Phillip took a party ashore at Sydney Cove, raised the British colors and officially proclaimed British sovereignty over New South Wales. In a sunset ceremony, Phillip and the officers drank to the health of the king and the royal family, and to the success of the new colony. -
First free settlers arrive for a new life in Australia

A new province was created, Victoria, separated from New South Wales. -
