    Computers were first used during the Cold War. At the time only scientists and researchers used it.
  • ARPANBT first established

    ARPANBT stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network and connected Stanford & UCLA
  • First network though of

    JCR Licklider though up the idea of a network that all computers could connect to and talk to each other.
  • First message sent/received

    It travelled from UCLA to Stanford and was supposed to say "Login" but they only received "Lo"
  • Computers connected

    At the end of the year, only 4 computers around the entire world were connected to the network.
  • ARPANBT expands

    It now connects to Harvard, MIT & BBN
  • Communication system in progress

    Ray Tomlinson thought up what would become the first Email system.
  • More computers added

    Computers were added to the system in Hawaii, England and Norway.
  • Transmission Control Protocol & Internet Protocol

    Vinton Cerf invents a way to connect computers from across the globe to another by a way called "Transmission Control Protocol" which was followed by "Internet Protocol".

    A French project that pushes the idea of a host computer handling data transfer.

    ARPANBT is now 75% Email.

    Proposal to connect all networks to a governing body.

    Gary Thuerk creates spam.

    The first social network created was called Usenet.

    Over the 1980's various scientists edited and improved Surf's ideas so they worked better.

    By the 1990's lots of people had computers, it was just the scientists and researchers anymore.

    Tm Berners-Lee created the world wide web that let anyone with an internet connection connect to it.
  • Creation of ERWISE

    ERWISE was the equivalent of google in those days and the first browser to have a graphic interface.

    Popularised browsing
  • Netscape Navigator created

    Inspired by Mosaic, this was the most popular browser of the time, attracting 90% of the internet traffic.
  • Dial-up internet created

    AOL & CompuServe started to provide dial-up internet for users
  • Myspace becomes popular

    Myspace is now the most popular social networking site.
  • Facebook college network created

    People start to use the internet more for social networking sites.
  • Iphone introduces mobile web

    The first mobile phone to be able to connect to the internet, it changed phones today.
