  • First public school

    First public school
"In 1647, Massachusetts passed another one requiring that all towns establish and maintain public schools. This law eventually led to the establishment of publicly funded district schools in all Massachusetts towns. The schools were distributed around the town, so that no child had to travel more than a mile or two."(Massachusetts First Education Law) This event is very important because this law is first time in the New World, and good example led other town to establish public school.
  • Incorporate lessons in reading and writing

Incorporate lessons in reading and writing
According to the Teaching to Change the World, Blue-backed spellers, developed by Noah Webster, incorporate lessons in reading and writing, all aimed at developing patriotic Americans.
"His goal was to provide a uniquely American, Christ-centered approach to training children." (Admin) This event helps answer my question because his book would help to build the most literate nation, and teach read, spell, and pronounce words using his book.

  • Schools forced Native Americans to speak English.

Schools forced Native Americans to speak English.
"As part of a national policy of assimilation, Native-American children are forced to attend off-reservation, English-only schools are punished harshly for speaking their native tongues." (Hye-Jin, K & Michael, W.)
This event helps my answer because forcing children to speak English is opposite situation from now. This policy had bad influence on education of Native American because their native languages are important for them to preserve.
  • Congress passes the first federal language law

Congress passes the first federal language law
According to the Teaching to Change the World, congress passes the first federal language law, requiring that those seeking to become naturalized citizens speak English. Government wanted to make English as the official language. On the other hand, this law led to eliminate most bilingual education in 1920s.
  • [Global Issue] Everyone can get education for free in Finland

[Global Issue] Everyone can get education for free in Finland
"In Finland, from elementary school to university, all the children can get education, meals, and stationeries for free. Schools use taxes to provide them. Finland has one of the best education system in the world."(Sekaizatsugakunote, 2018) The system in Finland is far from the system in U.S. This curriculum is very important because the system in Finland solves most of the problems in U.S such as inequity and poverty.

  • [Global issues] Learning a foreign language a ‘must’ in Europe, not so in America

[Global issues] Learning a foreign language a ‘must’ in Europe, not so in America
"Studying a second foreign language for at least one year is compulsory in more than 20 European countries. Meanwhile, the U.S. does not have a nationwide foreign-language mandate at any level of education."(Kat,2015) This illustrates that U.S. is behind in bilingual curriculum compared to other countries.
  • No Child Left Behind Act. School focused on teaching for the test.

No Child Left Behind Act. School focused on teaching for the test.
"States had to bring all students up to the “proficient” level on tests. The school had to share the information with parents of their students."(Andrew, J.D.) This event is very important because states provided equal educational opportunities for disadvantaged students, such as students in poverty, minorities and students receiving special education services. This act has improved the problem we have now.
