  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    This battle started the revolutionary war.
    great britain enacted a series of measures like stamp,sugar, and townshend acts. At dawn on april 19th 700 british troops arrived in lexington and came up on 77 militiamen gathered on the town green and started fighting.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    this battle was the turning point for the revolutionary war. There were two parts to the battle. the first battle ended with burgoynes force becoming very weak the second battle burgoynes got too weak and surrendered his troops.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    the significance of this battle was that general cornwallis surrendered to george washington as french and american forces trapped the british at yorktown. this was the final battle of the revolutionary war.
  • Northwest Ordinance

    it was a law passed by the confederation congress in 1787. basically it said which territories would be settled and which ones would become states it made sure the west was orderly
  • Alien and Sedition Acts9

    this was a series of laws that were passed by the federalist congress in 1798 and signed into law by president adams. The laws included new powers deport foreigners and at the same time making it harder for immigrants to vote.
  • Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions

    congress was mainly controlled by the federalists and in 1798 the alien and sedition acts were moved to the state legislatures. these resolutions written by jefferson asserted that states had the power to nullify unconstitutional federal laws
  • Louisiana Purchase

    the united states bought the louisiana territory from france for 50 million. buying this gave us control of the mississippi river and the city of new orleans they were both used by farmers to ship their crops and get money
  • Marbury v. Madison

    tis case established the principle of judicial review. it was the first to do so. this meant it gave american courts the power to strike down laws, statutes and some government actions.
  • Missouri Compromise

    it passed congress in 1820 it admitted missouri to the union as a slave state and barred slavery from the louisiana territory north of the 36' 30' Parallel. the main purpose was to keep a balance its the number of free and slave states
  • Monroe Doctrine

    this was a policy from the united states opposing european colonialism in the americas. It was started during president james monroe seventh annual state of the union address to congress.
  • Nullification Crisis

    this occurred while president jackson was in office. what happened was south carolina adopted the ordinance to nullify the tariff acts and label the unconstitutional.it was caused by a series of protective tariffs.
  • Texas Annexation

    this admitted to the union as the 28th state. texas declared independence from mexico
  • Oregon Treaty

    this is a big treaty this treaty or agreement set the boundaries between the united states and canada at the 49th parallel west of the rockies .
  • Mexican Cession

    the mexican cession is modern day southwest united states. the cession is important because at the end of the war with mexico the treaty of guadalupe hidalgo was signed and basically it established our mexican united states border
  • Compromise of 1850

    this was a bundle of five different bills passed by the united states congress in september of 1850. And it solved a four year political confrontation between slave and free states on the status of territories.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    some people say this is the first battle of the civil war because it is when slavery and anti slavery met and basically there was a small war between the two sides and it was in the kansas territory
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    this act allowed people to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery inside there borders. this act served to repeal the missouri compromise of 1820 that prohibited slavery north of latitude 36' 30'
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    this is what starts the civil war. it was a major attack but surprisingly there were not one casualty. it was the bombardment of fort sumter near charleston south carolina.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    this battle was also known as the battle of manassas. this was the first major battle of the civil war and the results were a confederate victory.
  • Battle of Antietam

    this battle is also known as the battle of sharpsburg. it was a clash near antietam creek in maryland. it was one of the single most bloodiest days in military history. also this was one of Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the northern states.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    this proclamation granted freedom to the slaves in all of the confederate states if the states did not return to the union. but freedom would only come to the slaves if the union won the war.
  • Gettysburg Address

    this is a speech that abraham lincoln delivered while the civil war was going on to the dedication to the soldiers deaths.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    also known as the siege of vicksburg it was the final major military action in the vicksburg campaign.this battle is important because they allowed the union army to take control of the mississippi river from confederacy.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    this battle was the big turning point in the war. it had the most casualties out of every battle. the union got victory in this battle. this was Robert E. Lee's second invasion of the north
  • 13th Amendment

    basically what it is saying is that it bans slavery in all american states and it bans all involuntary servitude except as punishment for a crime.
  • 14th Amendment

    the 14th amendment says if you are born in the united states you are a citizen which included former slaves who have just been freed.
  • 15th Amendment

    this amendment gives african africans the right to vote by saying rights of citizens of the united states to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the united states or by any state on account of race color or previous condition of servitude
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    this was a big decision for the U.S. supreme court the argument was plessy was an african american that was kicked off a train for sitting in the white section and furgueson was the judge that wanted him to be imprisoned plessy appealed the argument saying his 14th amendment right was violated but the court ruled in favor of the judge but the case was about separate but equal.
