  • The Second World War ends

    The Second World War ends
    It was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, involved the vast majority of the world's countries and is considered the worst conflict. The Allies fought to prevent the German army from invading the entire European continent, including the territory of the Soviet Union. Finally, Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, loss the war against the rest of the world, and they finally sign the peace. Above 50 million people died during the atacks.
  • Creation of the CIA

    The Central Intelligence Agency was created in the USA, on July 26 when Harry S. Truman was the president and signed the Natinal Security Act of 1947 into law. But the CIA was definetly established on September 18, and its first director was Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter.

    It's a milestone document in the history of human rights. The United Nations General Assembly adopted this document, which includes the 30 articles considered basic, at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.

    The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the earth. On October 4, 1957 the USSR launched an R-7 rocket from Toretam. The president of the United States ordered to accelerate the preparations to counterattack and to demonstrate that the Soviets were not the unique ones to be able to throw objects in the space. Four months after Sputnik, the Americans manage to launch Explorer I, which is smaller than Sputnik I.

    It is a Catholic basilica, an abbey and a monumental memorial in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid, in Spain. It was built by Republican prisoners of the Spanish Civil War and some hired workers from 1940 to 1958. It was designed by the architects Pedro Muguruza and Diego Mendez. The cross is 150 meters high. It belongs to the national heritage since it was inaugurated by Francisco Franco on April 1, 1959.

    On August 13th, 1961, the first brick was put in th Berlin Wall. It seperated West Berlin from East Berlin. This wall is the best known symbol of the Cold War and the division of Germany. 238 people died during the construction of the wall.
