Crusades Begin
The Crusades exposed Europeans to the wealth and riches of the Far East and created a demand for these goods. They were especially interested in getting their hands on gold, silk, and spices. After the Crusades they saw the Far East as a way to become wealthy. -

Marco Polo Visits China
Because of the Crusades, many European merchants wanted to become wealthy off of the products of the Far East. Merchants like Marco Polo and his uncle and father travelled all the way to China and back to set up trade with the East. Polo is remembered today because he had his story written down in the book "The Travels of Marco Polo." The book describes in detail the wealth that Polo saw with his own eyes while traveled all across Asia. -

Columbus Arrives in the New World
Christopher Columbus was yet another merchant who wanted to get to the Far East and make himself wealthy off of the many goods found there. He read about the wealth of Asia in Marco Polo's book and was inspired to make his own trip there. Because the Muslim world was an obstacle for getting to the Far East by a land route, Columbus decided to sail west to get to the east. Jamestown is Settled
With the leadership of John Smith, the help of Pocahontas and the Powhatan Indians, as well as the success of the tobacco of John Rolfe, Jamestown would become the first British colony to survive in the New World, and would be just the first step of England establishing 13 colonies along the Atlantic Coast of North America. -
