Cassette 1: Side A
Clay finds a cassette player in his dad's work area and puts the first one in. He discovers that it is Hannah Baker's voice on the tapes, the girl that committed suicide recently. On this particular tape, she explains how the "game", works. Her first reason why she killed herself was Justin Foley. He ruined Hannah's first kiss and then a rumor went around the school that things happened that did not happen at all. Clay steals Tony's Walkman for the night. -
Reception
Clay Jensen receives a package on his front porch with seven cassette tapes sitting in a box with thirteen sides marked. -
Cassette 1: Side B
Hannah's next reason was Alex Standall. He created a list of "Hot and Not", and Hannah was the best a**. This created a snow ball effect and ruined a deep friendship with another classmate. -
Cassette 2: Side A
Hannah's next person on the list was Jessica Davis. In this tape, she explains how their friendship started friendly and ended with a punch. -
Cassette 2: Side B
Clay goes to Monet's to listen to some tapes and discovers that Tyler Down, the school photographer, was a peeping Tom. She also explains how she invited another girl over and they caught Tyler redhanded. -
Cassette 3: Side B
Clay listens to Marcus Cooley's tape. Marcus almost stood Hannah up and showed up to Rosie's for her Dollar-Valentine date. He ends up trying to get into Hannah's pants. She tells him to stop and shoves him out of the booth. She was taken advantage of. Clay remembers a memory. -
Cassette 4: Side A
Clay travels to Rosie's, as Hannah suggested, and meets his Mom there. She delivers the rest of the tapes to him. He listens to Zach Dempsey's tape. Zach kept Hannah company after Marcus did what was previously mentioned on the previous tape at Rosie's. Zach was stealing Hannah's positive notes. He also did not speak up during a class discussion where he could have saved Hannah from any sort of self harm. Tony walks into Rosie's and finds his Walkman. -
Cassette 4: Side B
This particular tape is about Ryan Shaver. He stole one of Hannah's most revealing and deepest poem's that she had ever wrote and published it in the school newspaper. Most of the classes that day talked about it in class and Hannah was extremely embarrassed. The owner of Rosie's sees that Clay is in distress and gives him his milkshake for free. -
Cassette 5: Side A
Tony reveals to Clay that he knows all about the tapes. Hannah gave him a second set just in case her instructions were not followed. This tape is about Clay. Hannah specifically says that he does not belong on the list. She explains how Clay and her connected at a party for the first time. They ended up going into a bedroom and making out. Hannah ended up ruining that experience and pushed Clay away for no reason and told him to leave. What she really needed was for Clay to stay and help her. -
Cassette 3: Side A
Hannah's next victim is Courtney Crimsen. Hannah reveals that Courtney was the mystery person in the previous tape and how she basically abandoned Hannah. Courtney then proceeded to abandon Hannah at a party and only use her as a ride. Hannah ends up taking Tyler home. Clay gets on a bus and talks to Skye, his eighth grade crush. He ends up going to Tyler's house and finds Marcus Cooley there. He tells Clay to throw a rock into Tyler's window. -
Cassette 5: Side B
This is Justin Foley's second tape of the set. He let his girlfriend be raped by his best friend. This was directly after Clay had just left the room. Hannah hid in a closet and heard and watched the whole thing unfold. Justin and Hannah could have stopped it from happening. Clay makes Tony pull over and he throws up. -
The Next Day
Clay goes to school that morning and ends up catching up to Skye, trying to make sure he doesn't lose another chance or opportunity with someone. -
Cassette 6: Side A
This tape is about Jenny Kurtz. She offered to take Hannah home from the party and she was sober. But on the way home, she ran over a stop sign. Jenny did not want to report it but Hannah was not having any of that. Jenny made Hannah get out of the car and Jenny drove away and left Hannah standing there. Because of that sign being knocked down, a kid died and an old man was badly injured. The old man lived at Hannah's old house. Clay discovered the accident. -
Cassette 6: Side B
This is the tape where Hannah decides to kill herself by pills. She also explains about what happened after a party in a hot tub. Bryce Walker was in the hot tub and he ended up "raping", her. It technically was not considered rape, but it essentially was. It is also revealed that Bryce raped Jessica Davis in the bedroom where Hannah was hiding in the closet. Clay ends up cutting his hand on a rusted fence. He goes to a gas station and drains a bottle of rubbing alcohol on his hand. -
Cassette 7: Side A
This tape is about Mr. Porter, the fill-in guidance counselor. Hannah gives herself one last chance at life by visiting him. Hannah ends up getting frustrated about the meeting because she cannot do anything about what Bryce did to her the previous night before. Her mind is made up about suicide.
