    In 1493 after the reports of columbus's discoveries had reached the the spanish rulers (Ferdinand and Isabella) they enlisted papal support for their claims to the new world. To shelter them,the spanish- born pope (Alexander VI) delivered bulls setting up a line of separation. Neither power was to attend any territory already in the hands of a christian ruler.

    The new boundary enabled Portugal to claim the coast of Brazil after its discovery by Pedro Cabral in 1500. Brazilian calculation and settlement far to the west of the line of demarcation in subsequent countries. On June 7, 1494 Spain and Portugal met at tordesilla.

    According to the papal bull, all lands west of the land would belong to Spain. The bull did not mention Portugal, however, and one interpretation of the papal bull could be that Spain then gained control of Portugal’s lands in Asia.
    Not happy with this arrangement, Portugal’s King John II negotiated with the Spanish monarchs. Portugal had more ships and military might at this time, so Spain was at somewhat if the negotiations broke down and resulted in a fight.
