    A few nobles and army officers tried to overthrow the czar’s government. They wanted to set up a constitutional monarchy. Nicholas I crushed the uprising and killed 5 leaders and banished many more to Siberia. Even though the Decemberists’ failed they were heroes to later generations.

    Nicholas II had no previous training to be czar. He was crowned after his father died from kidney disease. Nicholas II was crowned in the Ouspensky Cathedral in Moscow.

    Developed because of the rivalry between Russia and Japan. This war was for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. Russia had pressured Japan into granting them a lease for the strategically important port of Port Arthur in 1898.

    A violent massacre in St. Petersburg. There were protests that left more than 100 marchers dead and many wounded. After that there were still many strikes.

    Russia entered the war with the largest army, with 1,400,000,000 soldiers. the first offense Russia launched was against Germany in August 1914.

    Riots and strikes flared up in Petrograd. Crowds protested the war and the food shortages. They shouted “Bread and Peace!”. The government sent troops to regain order when the protest began to spread. Hundreds of soldiers even joined the protesters.

    Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne
    He was forced to abdicate by Petrograd insurgents. Then a provisional government was put in his place. He was the last czar of Russia.

    Where the Red Army successfully defended the Bolshevik government against many anti-Bolshevik armies. Russia lost a large portion of its territory to Germany, caused a breach between the communists and the Left Socialist Revolutionaries, who then left the coalition.

    The Bolsheviks reorganized Russia. They renamed it the USSR or the Soviet Union. The country was reorganized into a union of 4 republics. Later the Soviet Union grew to have 15 republics.
  • Vladimir Lenin's Death

    Vladimir Lenin's Death
    Lenin was a leader of the Soviet Union. He died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 54. Lenin was arrested and exiled to Siberia in 1897, but later traveled to Western Europe , where in 1903 he developed the Bolsheviks.
