    Nicholas II reluctantly ascended the throne after his father died. He was the last czar of Russia.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War
    Despite Russia having a greater amount of troops and resources, Japan easily won. This caused shame and distrust in the czar.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Led by Georgy Gapon, protesters marched into the Winter Palace asking for freedom of speech and the right to vote. The chief of security ordered fire, killing over 100 people and giving the czar the nickname "Bloody Nicholas".

    Russia fought against Germany in World War I, but people had no food and soldiers had no weapons. Later in the war, the Soviet government signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk to get out of the war, but they had to give up Ukraine, Poland, and other Baltic territories.

    After czar Nicholas II stepped down from the throne, a new provisional government was set up. However, the government was weak, so the Bolsheviks seized power. Russia became a communist state and Lenin became the leader.

    Following World War struggles, there's an uprising in Petrograd and the army joins the strikes, forcing the czar to abdicate his throne. He and his famlly are arrested by Bolsheviks and executed, ending the czarist rule.

    The government splits into two political parties, the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. Disagreements over the treaty causes a civil war betweeen the Red (Bolsheviks) and the White (Mensheviks) armies to break out and it lsts 6 years before the Bolsheviks win, leaving the country in ruins.

    After the end of the civil war, Lenin unified the Soviets and centralized control in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

    Vladimir Lenin's Death
    Before Lenin's death, he worried about how much power Stalin was accumulating, and thought that Russia deserved a kinder, more considerate leader. However, once Lenin died, Stalin took his place.
