    It was compromise created by Henry Clay. It settled the conflict of Missouri being added as a slave state setting off the balance of free and slave states. It said Maine would be added as a free state to keep the balance in power between free and slaves states,

    The Nullification Crisis
    Tariffs caused southern states like South Carolina to feel that the tariffs only benefited the North. Vice President John C. Calhoun stated a state could nullify a law if it was unconstitutional. South Carolina tried to nullify but were denied so then they threatened to secede. Henry clay proposed a compromise and lowered the tariff.

    There were many debates on whether the new territories from Mexico would be free or slavery. Henry Clay proposed that California would be free and no more slave trade in Washington d.c. the south got stronger fugitive slave laws and slavery was allowed in the rest of the territories.

    It was passed by Congress saying that all escaped slaves in the North are to be captured and returned to there owners. It later led to John Brown's Raid and the Civil War.

    Through popular sovereignty they would choose whether Kansas would be free or a slave state. Violence started because proslavery people came from Missouri illegally voting making the antislavery citizens make there own govt. so they started attacking one another. This caused John Brown to kill 5 proslavery people.

    Dred Scott was a slave who sued his owner to be free. On the basis that he lived in a free territory making him emancipated. The court said he was not free in the territories, wasn't entitled to the constitution, and that he was property and could not be taken away without due process.

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    It was an attempt to help slaves demand their freedom by John Brown. the plan was to take control of an arsenal at the army base in Harpers Ferry Virginia to give slaves weapons. It failed and John Brown and his companions were executed this raised tensions in America.

    In this election Abraham Lincoln won, after several states seceded making the Confederacy.
