    Harsh Working Conditions

    Women were employed as low paid workers. Women mostly found jobs in domestic service, and textile factories. They were payed $3-$12 weekly. Most kids started working at the age of 6 and got payed a quarter of the adult man. Kids worked about 19 hours w/ 1 hour of break. Also working around large, heavy, and dangerous equipment all day. Most kids got injured or killed use the machines and if they got injured and were unable to work they were fired.
  • Pendleton Act

    Patronage System is the Practice in which a political party, after winning an election, gives government civil service jobs to it's supporters. Merit system is the process of promoting and hiring government employees based on their ability to preform a job, rather than on their political connections.
  • The Interstate Commerce Act of 1887

    The causes for the law was to regulate the railroad industry particulary its monopolist practices. Supreme Court ruled that state laws should not regulate interstate railroads. Congress had the exclusive power to regulate the railroads. The railroad monopolist had the power to set prices, exclude competitors and control several geographic areas in individual state. The importance of this law is to prevent state polices that favored businesses at the expense of citizens.
  • The Sherman Antitrust Act

    The purpose of this lawmaking was to protect consumers from the efforts of trust, and monopolies to unfairly restrain trade. Its aim was to preserve economic competition in the market place and it imposed severe penalties on those violating the legislation. The effect of the Sherman Antitrust Act was the first measure enchanted by the U.S. congress to prohibit trust monopolies. The Government used this toward J.D.Rockefeller with standard oil to disband his monopoly with oil industry.

    Progressivism is the term applied to a variety of responses to the economic and social problems rapid industrialization introduced to America. Progressivism began as a social movement and grew into a political movement. The early progressives rejected Social Darwinism.

    Populist ("People") Party

    Some of populist parties core ideas were Unlimited Coinage Of Silver to make loan payments easier. Immigration Restrictions with quotas. Shorter work day of 8 hours. Directed Election of Sen. instead of by state legislatures. The cause for these ideas were because rich industrialists and bankers had a strong hold of Government. William Jennings Bryan was nominated for president after he delivered his "Cross Of Gold" speech but lost to William McKinley.
  • Plessy v.s.Ferguson

    It upheld racial segregation laws. Court ruled law that "implies merely a legal distinction" between whites and blacks did not conflict with 13th & 14th amendments. Separate but equal means that a person or group of people is treated differently even though access to public places, services opportunities and legal rights. Jim Crow laws was a system meant to discriminate against African Americans.
  • Klondike Gold Rush

    100,000 Prospectors migrated, only 30,000 made it, only 2,000 found gold, only 200 got rich. Most frozen terrain was to steep for pack animals, miners carried about 1/2 a ton of equipment over mountains. Greatest economic impact was a local town where prospectors bought food and supplies, also those who found gold blew it all on bars and gambling in those towns.

    Muckraker Journalism

    Muckraker- One who inquires into and publishes scandal and allegations of corruption among political and business leaders. Muckrakers exposed people with unsafe working conditions, political corruption and social injustice. Muckrakers lessened corruption in many aspects in many of american life.
  • Pure Food & Drug Act

    Reporters started to expose harmful ingredients in certain foods and medicines, such as Coca-Cola originally having Cocaine in it. The Government then began enforcing the production and distribution of consumer products by founding the Food & Drug Admin (FDA). Products were later required to label the harmful ingredients and would later on remove them.
  • NAACP

    Founders of National Advancement for the Advancement of colored people were Ida B. Wells & W.E.B Du Bois. The purpose of the NAACP was to ensure the political, all persons and to eliminate racial discrimination. Causes & Effects NAACP was founded and as direct response racial riots started.
  • Assassination Of James Garfield

    Why: He thought God had told him to shoot the President. He had written a speech for Garfield that helped him win the presidential election. Formulated the delusion that the speech was a key factor in the president's victory. Asked to be rewarded with a consulship(Chairman of the Senate) in Paris. Result: Doctors killed the president because they didn't wash their hands. This helped create the President Act.
