  • Enrico Fermi

    Enrico Fermi
In 1938 Enrico Fermi had left Italy not because of being driven out because of the Germans. But of being offers the Nobel Prize and working for Columbia University. He and his family moved to the United States and started working at Columbia University. http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Fermi.html

    The worning to the President
In the 1930 scientist talked about how a unripen scientist had found out a way to split the uranium atom. In 1939 Scientists Einstein and Fermi had decided to ward the president about the threat of the atomic bomb. They wrote to President Roosevelt to tell him about this threat. The president decided to have a desiccation about the problem.

    Forming The Manhattan Project
In the late months of 1941 President Roosevelt had decided to slowly proceed with the design of the atomic bomb. He had hired over 100 scientist to work on the project. All though the scientists were not able to congregate outside of the lab for secrecy. This project was called The Manhattan Project. http://www.ushistory.org/us/51f.asp
  • First Results

    First Results
The research was at first done at a few Universities. When Enrico Fermi had an incredible discovery at the University of Chicago. He and a group of physicist had made the first controlled nuclear reaction under the grand stands of Stagg Field.

  • The Expansion of the Project

    The Expansion of the Project
After the event on Chicago nuclear factories were built in Ok Ridge, Tennessee, Hanford and Washington. They had also built the testing lab in Los Alamos New Mexico. The Manhattan Project took over 2billion dollars and formed 120,000 jobs. http://www.ushistory.org/us/51f.asp
  • It Never Happened

    It Never Happened
Secrecy was important as ever. Nether the Germans or Japanese could learn about The Manhattan Project. Keeping 120,000 people was almost impossible. Only special scientist were able to know about the A-bomb. Even the Vice-President Truman didn’t know about the project http://www.ushistory.org/us/51f.asp
  • Spy

    Spy
Within that year the leaders had learned that a Soviet spay was with in the knowing The Manhattan project. Even though billions of dollars were spent on the project and secrecy. The Spy named Klaus Fuchs was a scientist that was born in Germany. http://www.atomicarchive.com/Bios/Fuchs.shtml

    Day One Test Prep.
Two hemispheres of plutonium were brought from Los Alamos to the test site in New Mexico. The balls of plutonium were no bigger than tennis balls. They thought that the bomb would unstable the earth by a drastic disaster. http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/manhattan_project.htm
  • Day Two Test Prep.

    Day Two Test Prep.
On day two, when the bomb was being razed to the top of the tower, the bomb had fallen 50 feet. It landed onto mattress and had no outer damage, but they could not tell if the core was damaged. Also the detonator had blown a cricket, so they didn’t know if the one in the bomb would work. http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/manhattan_project.htm
  • Night of Test

    Night of Test
On the night of the test day there was a lightning storm at the test ground. If the tower was struck by lightning it could have blown the tower release lack, or the detonator. The tower was made of a certain kind of metal that it would make the metal seem like it was earth to the lightning. http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/manhattan_project.htm
  • Test Day

    Test Day
When it happened the bomb dropped from a 100 foot tower. When it hit the ground there was a blinding flash. The force of the explosion broke windows of civilian homes over 200 miles away. Henry Linschitz was physicist on the Manhattan project and he said, “My God, we're going to drop that on a city?" http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/manhattan_project.htm
  • The Bombing of Hiroshima

    The Bombing of Hiroshima
In August of 1945, the plane the Enola Gay took off from an island in the North Pacific headed tords Hiroshima 1500 miles from Japan. The Bombing of Nagasaki
The Box car, was the plane that dropped the bomb, Fat Boy, on to Nagasaki. The plane was as modified as the Enola Gay. When they dropped the bomb onto Nagasaki, even though it was more powerful it didn’t do as much damage as the one in Hiroshima because of the land shape.
