  • The Treaty of Versailles 1919.

    The Treaty of Versailles 1919.
    June 1919 - The Treaty of Versailles was imposed on Germany by the UK the USA and France. The Treaty of Versailles meant that Germany had to give France, Poland, Denmark and Belgium land they lost to them. And were forbidden to combine armies with Austria. They’re armies were to be reduced to only 100,000 men. And keep their troops out of their Western Territories (the ‘demilitarized’ zone Rhineland’).
  • The League of Nations, 1920.

    The League of nations was established in 1920 after the first world war. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the league of nations was supposed to create a place for solving international issues. However since the US didn’t become members it wasn’t as successful what it could’ve been. Hitler left in 1933, giving an excuse that Germany was disarmed, this made a huge impact on future events as Germany in particular the Nazi party led by Hitler. Was one of the few reasons for starting WWII.
  • Britain’s industrial conflict. ‘black friday’ 1921.

    Britain was in a conflict with miners in 1921. When on the 30th of March miners had to take a paycut or else they would be locked out of employment. Black Friday also destroyed the ‘triple alliance’ which involved miners, transport workers and railwaymen. Their conditions were worse than most jobs. The prime minister at the time tried to reorganise some stuff with the miners. But the miners rejected it thinking of it as a bribe.
  • The Smith Family charity is founded, 1922.

    The Smith family was established in 1922 with hopes of providing help and support of disadvantaged children. In the 1970s The smith family helped people that were fleeing war in East Timor and Vietnam. It originated because of 5 businessmen returning from the Blue Mountains to then visiting an orphanage donating children toys and sweets. When they were asked what their name was by the matron of the establishment. They all said ‘smith’. That’s how this charity was founded.

    In 1923 the treaty of Lausanne was signed by the French, British, Italians, Japanese, Greek, Romanians, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. This in turn for Italy meant that they had to give up Libya and the Dodecanese islands. Turkey gave Italy a payment. This gave Turkey some territory they didn’t have. And Italy gained money from this. So it was a win for Turkey and Italy.

    The Great Depression started in October 1929 and ended at the start of World War II. Australia was affected heavily by agricultural and industrial demand plummeting significantly. The world was hit hard by this crash. As people who were millionaires went unemployed in hours or days.
  • Spain becomes a republic for the second time, 1931

    Spain became a republican country in 1931 for the 2nd time. Elections were held in 1931 with the PSOE getting 116 seats and Leroux's radical party getting 94. Lerroux became the foreign minister. It was a republican-socialist coalition. Spain then entered what is called (bienio negro) in spanish or ‘two black years’. In 1935 it’s final ‘black’ year. Lerroux's radical party collapsed after 2 huge scandals. And in 1939 was the end of the 8 year republic.

    On the 19th of March 1932. The Sydney Harbour Bridge opened. It took 9 years of dedication and hard work, blood, sweat and tears going into this project. And 6.25 million Australian pounds (at the time) or $13.5 million Australian dollars. This was eventually paid off in 1988 by tolls.
  • Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany, 1933.

    Hitler and his party, the National Socialist German Workers’ Party otherwise referred to as the Nazi party came to power in 1933 and ruled Germany between 1933 and until the end of WW2. The Nazi party assumed dictatorial powers. They practised the ideology of Nazism. Which is extreme racism and what they practised.
  • Victoria is devastated by the ‘Black Friday’ fires in 1939.

    On January 13, 1939, two fires which were already burning had combined into one massive killer front. It was caused by a drought which had been lasting for several years. This heat wave though was the final straw. Two fires combined into a massive fire front that devastated the lives of many and killing 71, with 650 buildings lost in this horrible blaze.
