    Germ Theory of Disesase

The germ theory was proposed by Girolamo Fracastoro. This theory states that many diseases are caused by microorganisms called pathogens.
  • Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics

Although the idea of inheritance if acquired characteristics was introduced by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, his beliefs on it are still widely used this day. One theory that he came up with was the idea that giraffes acquired their long necks their ancestors trying to extend their necks to obtain fruit from the highest branches in the trees.
  • The Voyage of the Beagle

The Voyage of the Beagle, was a sort of a journal written by Charles Darwin detailing his voyage from Plymouth Sound December 1831. The idea of the trip was to explore different fields of science, including: biology, geology, and anthropology.

    Gregor Mendel

Gregor Mendel, known as the father of genetics, conducted many experiments on pea plants, which established many rules of hereditary. He wored with the different characteristics of the plants with the terms "dominant, and recessive"
  • Alfred Russel Wallace

Alfred Rustle Wallace was an anthropologist, biologist, explorer, and a geographer. Alfred wrote a paper on the theory of evolution. His work prompted Charles Darwin to publish Origins of Species.
  • The Origin of Species

The Origin of Species was a book considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. It introduced a scientific theory of natural selection through evolving populations over time. This book also provided evidence that suggested that the diversity of life came about by common descent through pattern of evolution.
  • Bohr Model

Introduced by Neils Bohr, the Bohr model depicts an element with its protons and neutrons in its nucleus, with electron surrounding.
  • The Develpment of SCUBA

Jacques Cousteau co-invents an underwater breathing apparatus prototype for a film that later gets tweaked to exploring depths of 500m
  • Hershey-Chase

The Hershey-Chase experiments conducted by Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase helped confirm that DNA is a genetic material and that it did in fact carry the information for inheritance. It showed that when bacteriophage infected bacteria, the DNA entered the host while the protein did not. This experiment won the Nobel prize in 1969.
  • Miller-Urey

The Miller-Urey experiment was a chemical experiment that mocked the conditions of "early" Earth. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate abiogenesis. This experiment made use of water, methane, ammonia, and hydrogen gas. Also, electricity was used to simulate lightning conditions striking the water.
  • Watson and Crick

James Watson and Francis Crick made history in science when they discovered the our DNA's structure forms a "twisted ladder", calling it a double helix. Discovering this structure gives understanding to addition properties of our DNA.
  • Lucy

This Lucy specimen is an early Australopithecus, dated to be living about 3.2 million years ago. The skeleton found, represents 40% of the skeleton of a female. It was located in Ethiopia. After the skeleton was constructed, it stood about 3'7" tall and resembled a chimpanzee. The way that Lucy's bones are arranged, suggests that she walked upright, similar to humans.

    Human Genome Project

The Human Genome Project (HGP) refers to a global scientific research project aimed at determining the sequence of nucleotide base pairs that make up human DNA. This research also was used to be able to identify and locate the genes in a human's genome. Although HGP wasn't able to sequence 100% of DNA, it sequences euchromatic regions of the genome, making up 92% of the human genome with 99.99% efficiency.

    Sahelanthropus Tchadensis

Between July 2001 and March 2002, and across three different sites comes the discovery of Sahelanthropus fossils. Discovered in the Djurab Desert of Chad, it is debated whether the was bipedal or not. One thing that is striking, is that the Sahelanthropus may represent a common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees. To-date, there hasn't been any discovery of fossils potcranial.
