    Severe drough has plagued the great plains reagion of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico. The winds begin to pick up and static electrisity forms between the ground and the dust. This created the soils to spin and whirl in the air creating the " black blizzard"

  • Blizzards increase

    The dust storms begin to increase in numbers, many at 12 storms in one year, the following year 38 storms are seen.
  • Franklin Roosevelt

    Franklin Roosevelt took office. The economic of the nation are in trouble. The Congress comes up with the Emergency Banking Act of 1933 which stablizies the banking industry and gives faith to people.
  • Emergency Farmers Act

    Emergency Farm Mortgage Act allots $200 million for help farmers with their morgages. This set up local credit associations.
  • Soil erosion

    Soil erosion control camps were developed and by the end of September 161 camps were created.
  • Agricultural strike

    The largest agricultural strike begins. The famers in the plains have moved to California looking for migrant farm work. They can't find the work so they work in the Cannery's. The strike last for 24 days and two men, and 1 women was killed in the end the workers were given 25% raise.
  • Taylor Grazing Act

    The bank is no longer allowed to disposses farmers in time of distress.
  • Emergency Relief Appropriation Act

    The Act provides $525 million for drought relieft. Also the Works Progress Administration will emply 8.5 million people.
  • Reparing the land

    Erosion has been declared " a national menace" by Congress. Conservation programs will begin in order to retail the topsoil and prevent irreparable damage to the land. Faming techniques will include, strip cropping, terracing, crop rotation, contour plowing, and cover crops.
  • California blocking the border

    125 policemen from the Los Angeles Police department are sent to the Arizona and Oregon borders to keep out the " undesirables". The American Civil Liberties Union sues the city because of this.
  • Shelterbelt Project

    Franklin D. Roosevelt started the Shelterbelt project which was to plant native trees all along the plains, from Canada to Texas to help the land from eroding. Workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps were to plant the trees and the program was going to cost $75 million in 12 years. There were disputes on where the money was going to come from and the program had limited success.
  • Getting better...

    The new conservation programs have seen a reduction of 65% in amount of soil blowing. The drought still continues.
  • It's over

    The rain finally brings an end to the drought. There is no longer a depression with the coming of World War II and the plains then strive with golden wheat.
