    Sending for Help
    Reverend Paris sends for help. His daughter Betty is asleep in her bed and does not wake up. He sends for Reverend Hale of Beverly because of his background in freeing people from witchcraft. Parris: "Tell him I have sent for Reverend Hale of Beverly" Act 1.
  • Abigail's Threat

    Abigail's Threat
    After seeing Betty asleep in bed, Abigail does not believe she is in a coma. She tells all the girls in the group not to tell that they were just dancing, but that they were bewitched. At first they are hesitant. As a result, Abigail then threatens, "And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things,and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you." Act 1

    Assumptions Can Ruin.
    Mr. Hale questions Abigail about what happened in the woods. She accuses Tituba for sending her familiar spirit on Abigail. She talks about how Tituba made her drink blood. Tituba denies witchcraft and that the devil has taken her, along with Goody Good, and Goody Osburn. "Does someone afflict you, child? It need not be a woman, mind you, or a man." Hale Act 1.
  • Abigail's Lie

    Abigail's Lie
    After she tells the girls not to spoil anything, Abigail talks to John Proctor alone. She tells him that the witchcraft was all fake and they were just dancing. She told this lie to save herself from discipline. "Oh posh, we were dancin' in the woods last night, and my uncle leaped in on us. She took fright, is all." Abigail Act 1
  • Suspicions

    Suspicions
    Proctor and Elizabeth are together, but everything is uncomfortable. Proctor thinks Elizabeth hasn't forgiven him, but she says he is the one who hasn't forgiven himself. He insults her, even though she says she forgave him long ago. "Oh Elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer!" Proctor Act 11.
  • Town Talk

    Town Talk
    As things carry on, more and more people are talking about witchcraft. People are accusing one another and people are being hanged for crimes of no proof. The town of Salem seems to be doomed to downfall. Soon, Elizabeth is charged. "I have a warrant for your wife.... Why, Abigail Williams charge her." Cheever Act 11.
  • A Day in Court

    A Day in Court
    As more and more people are being accused, Proctor and his friends try to save people from being hanged on spectral evidence. Giles is arrested for contempt for not giving names to the judge. Proctor tries to get Mary Warren to confess but she does not because she is afraid of Abigail. "I-I cannot give you his name." Giles Act 111
  • Miscommunication

    Miscommunication
    Proctor accuses Abigail of being a whore because he had an affair with her. She denies, and John says that his wife is honest, and that she will say it is true. She comes to the court and denies it for the sake of John's name. Then she is taken back to jail. "I have known her, sir. I have known her." Proctor Act 111

    In Jail He Goes.
    John tries again to make Mary Warren confess, and she does not once more. She does not because she is afraid of what Abigail will do to her, so she accuses John of threatening her to confess and his familiar spirit came on him. "I'll murder you, he says, if my wife hangs!" Mary Warren Act 111
  • Dying a Martyr

    Dying a Martyr
    John is sentenced to hang and know he does the right thing. He does not want his family to learn to rat out innocent people to save themselves, he dies for a purpose. "He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!" Elizabeth Act 4
