    Worldwide struggle for power and influence. Soviet Communism and American Capitalism/Democracy.
  • Potsdam Conference

    Main people were Stalin, Truman and Attlee. Had three main terms of agreement; divide Germany and Berlin as previously agreed, demilitarise Germany, and re-establish democracy in Germany including its rights. The USA and USSR fight got worse becayse the trust and cooperation between the leaders didnt agree.
  • Beginning of Cold War

    Trying to persuade people to join their side. The Marshall plan gave money to West Europe (13 billion) and Germany was split into occupation zones. Tense relations kept on being built upon and led to an even bigger war. Americans wanted to prevent spread of communism in Western Europe and Soviet Union wanted opposite.
  • Berlin Blockade / Airlift

    Soviet Union blocked all road and rail travel to and from West Berlin, President Harry S. Truman ordered a massive airlift of supplies into West Berlin so they wouldn't be cut off. Soviet was attempting to starve and give Germany no other choice than to join their side of the war.
  • Vietnam war

    Longest war in American history. Almost 60,000 American deaths and 2 million Vietnamese deaths. Costly conflict that pitted the communist reign of northern Vietnam. Effort to protect the South Vietnamese from totalitarian government. November 1, 1955 – April 30, 1975
  • Berlin Wall

    Physical border separating East and West Berlin. People favored the Westover the east. Definitely consequences occurred for refugees to or from eastern or western Burlington trying to cross the wall. Separated the democratic western countries and the communist countries of Eastern Europe. U.S. was on the west and USSR was on the East.
  • Cuban missile crisis

    Climax of the Cold War. Soviet union wanted to install misses on Cuba. The missiles would have been able to reach the United States fast. Kennedy ordered a naval blockade of Cuba and all U.S. military forces to DEFCON 3. The US forced Spain to surrender on Cuba. Hotline was installed between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to help resolve future conflicts.
  • Glasnot / perestroika

    Mikhail S. Gorbachev was the new leader for thhe USSR and gave a speech on March 1985. The Soviet unions economy and agriculture sector's begin to fall apart. They wanted to give more rights and freedoms to the citizens. Had more policies in 1990 which is the same year he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Fall of communism/ Soviet Union

    Divided into 15 separate countries. Transferred the entire world political and economic and military alliances all over the globe. Gorbachev was forced to resign power in Russia to Boris Yeltsin. The end of communism in east Europe and the fall of the Soviet Union showed the Cold War was over
