    Tuesday, May 8th 1945 marks Victory in Europe where Hitler's war came to an end. After six years of torture, Germans finally surrendered. WWII was over and everyone in Europe was celebrating the victory of the Allies. Soon after, the Allies break apart and the United States and the Soviet Union become major rivals.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan deals with economic action/ policy. The Marshall Plan was the United States offering a huge aid package which would help recover Europe and also prevent the expansion of Soviet Communism. The Marshall Plan channeled economic assistance and food to Europe to help Europe's countries rebuild. The Marshall plan also benefited the United States because it helped create markets for American-made goods.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Korean War was the first militaristic action taken place during the Cold War.North Korea was armed with Soviet tanks and with the U.S helped South Korea out in the war. Kim II-Song wanted to join the peninsula under Communist rule even though the UN (united nations) split the peninsula between the 38th parallel to avoid conflict between the Soviet Union and the U.S. Just like Vietnam war, Korean war was part of a larger struggle during the Cold War to extinguish communism.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
    Science and technology were involved in the Cold War. In the 1950's, the United States and Soviet were both working to create new technology. The Soviet Union came out with Sputnik and launched it on October 4th. Sputnik was the first artificial Earth Satellite. Due to Sputnik being launched, it created tension between the two rivals.

    SALT I
    SALT I is dealing with political action/ policy. SALT I was the first agreement signed by the U.S and the Union of the Soviet Socialist to stop ballistic missiles armed with nuclear weapons.
  • Summer Olympics

    Summer Olympics
    The Summer Olympics deals with sports. Because the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, the U.S and other countries decided to boycott the Olympics of 1980. The Soviets did not participate in the Olympics of 1984 because they feared that their athletes would not be safe so they boycotted the Olympics.
  • The Berlin Wall is Toppled

    The Berlin Wall is Toppled
    When the Berlin Wall was destroyed, it signaled the beginning of the end for the Cold War. East Germany residents celebrating because they were finally free to cross the border.
