    The Liberator was an antislavery newspaper written by William Lloyd Garrison and Isaac Knapp in December of 1831. Their little building was through Boston. Garrison published his last article in 1865.
  • Compromise of 1850

    How the compromise of 1850 started was California wanted to enter the U.S as a free state, however slave states would be outvoted in the Senate. Even worse, anti-slavery groups wanted to ban slavery in Washington, D.C. Only slavery itself would be banned but not slave trade.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin published
    Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel, it helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act passed

    Kansas-Nebraska Act passed
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was introduced by Stephen A. Douglas. It was organized to settle the issue of slavery in the territories. Territories west of Missouri and Iowa as the territories of Kansas and Nebraska.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was an enslaved African-American bought by a doctor in Missouri, a slave state. After eleven years of fighting for freedom the case finally got to the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Roger B. Tawney said the court's opinion: Dred Scott was still and enslaved person. The Republicans were outraged!

    James Buchanan was sworn into office in 1857, but before that he had to have the election.He took all the Southern states except Maryland. He also had 174 electoral votes. the election was divided along rigid lines.

    John Brown and a group of people raided an arsenal he hoped to arm African Americans and start a revolt against slave holders. Some Northerners that were anti-slavery rejected his use of violence. Others saw him as a martyr- a person who dies for a cause.. John Brown's death frightened many Southerners!

    Abe Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. His running mate was Stephen A. Douglas. They had 7 debates mostly about slavery. Douglas was re-elected senator of Illinois. Lincoln challenged Douglas to all 7 debates.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter begins

    Battle at Fort Sumter begins
    Fort Sumter was a U.S fort guarding Charleston Harbor. The fort was low on supplies so they sent word to Lincoln. Fort Sumter got attacked on April 14, 1861. This is the order in which the events happened, 1. Lincoln gets a message from the commander at Fort Sumter. 2. Lincoln sent unarmed men with supplies to the fort. 3. Jefferson Davis ordered Confederate forces to attack. 4. Lincoln issued a call for troops. 5. Fort Sumter surrendered.

    This battle was the first major land battle of the Civil War. The Confederates won this battle so the Union retreated first but the North was not going to give up.
  • South Carolina secedes from the Union

    South Carolina secedes from the Union
    Although Lincoln's election was fair, it nonetheless pushed the Deep South toward succession. Abe Lincoln wanted to end slavery where it was and that is where slavery was and South Carolina thought that it was offense to be talking directly to them.

    Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation only for the rebelling states not for the border states. Three million slaves were declared free forever when Lincoln issued the Proclamation on January 1st, 1863.

    The Battle of Gettysburg was the most important and most famous battle of the Civil War. It started on July 1st and ended on July 3rd 1863. The days were long and hot not to mention all the stuff they had to carry on their backs. The Union was in deep trouble because they only had 20,000 troops and the Confederates had 25,000!

    Union General torched the industrial part of Atlanta, pulling away his supply lines. He did this because the Confederates threatened to cut down his supply lines. Sherman had to split his army. He had all of his soldiers checked to see if they were fit enough if they were unfit they would be sent to Nashville.

    This was one of the last battles of the Civil War. It was the final engagement of Confederate Leader Robert E. Lee before him and his troops surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, on the morning of April 9, 1865.

    Shortly after 10pm, Abe Lincoln got fatally shot by actor John Wilkes Booth, in the Presidential booth at Ford's Theater. This happened on the night of April 14, 1865.
