    Attack of Fort Sumter
    This was the start of the Civil War. It happened in Charleston, South Carolina when Fort Sumter was bombarted. The gunfire and war went on for 34 hours before Major Robert Anderson evacuated the Fort. After this, many people were encouraged to join in the fight and it only got worse from here.
  • The Battle of Bull Run

    The Battle of Bull Run
    The first battle of the Civil War. 18,000 men on each side were very unprepared for this battle and poorly trained. It took place in Virginia, not far from Washington, D.C. The Confederates ended up winning this battle.
  • The Battle of Fredericksburg

    This battle was held in Northern Viriginia and was known as one of the most "one sided battles" in history. The confederate came out with a "win" on this one even though both sides tragically lost tens of thousands of men.
  • Emacipation Proclamation

    Emacipation Proclamation
    It's intent was to free slaves in the South. It was issued by Abraham Lincoln to proclaim the freedom of slaves in ten states. Although it was not followed as strictly as he had hoped, it was a great step in the right direction and people continued to fight for it and never gave up.
  • Battle of Appomattox Court House

    Battle of Appomattox Court House
    This was one of the last battles of the American Civil War. This was the last engagement of the Confederate Army before they surrendered to the Union Army. This ceremony disbanded the Northern Army which triggered many other surrenders across the South ending the war.
