The British Acts

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act was passed so it would increase revenue to help reduce the debt that they were in from the French and Indian war. The Sugar Act taxed all products with sugar in it such as molasses and syrups. Then it would cause the price to be raised and much higher price for any sugar projects. Therefore the colonists were very angry and thought it was very unfair of the parliament to charge against them.

  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    The Quartering Act was passed so that the King could protect the colonial interests. Which meant that he sent soldiers to the colonies and the colonists had to house the soldiers and feed them. The King states that he sent them over to protect the colonists from the Frenchmen and Native Americans even though the French and Native Americans were far away and were not interested in attacking them. The soldiers were really living there so that the colonist would have to buy food and pay the tax.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act was passed so that the British parliament could get more money to pay off the debt from the war. Also because the other Acts were not working. The Act stated that any papers, liquor licenses, cards, or any other official paper work had to be stamped and you had to pay a tax on the stamps. This made the colonists mad again and they didn't like that Britain was trying to rule them.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    The Townshend Act was passed to stop smuggling stuff into the colonies. The Act stated that the soldiers could search anyone's home to find smuggled items that they didn't pay a tax for. That person would be punished. The colonists were smuggling because they didn't want to pay the tax to get the item.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    The Tea Act was passed so that the parliament could help the East Indian company and so they could pay off the debt from the war. The Act stated that the government wanted to help the tea company by putting tax which would also help the government. The government put a monopoly on the tea company. So it taxed tea which was a very popular drink in the colonies because they drank it a lot.
  • Boston Port Act

    Boston Port Act
    The Boston Port Act was passed so that they could shut down the Boston Harbor so nobody could come out from the colonies but British ships could still come and go from the harbor. They had to do this because of what happened with the Boston Tea Party. It stated that no colonist or company in the colony could leave, but British ships could come in and out to supply them.
  • MA Government Act and the Administration of Justice Act

    MA Government Act and the Administration of Justice Act
    The Ma Government Act was passed so that no meetings could be called unless it had a British governor in the meeting. Which meant that if the colonists wanted to make laws and a new government they couldn't because they would need the governor present which he would then tell the King. It stated that if they were caught they would be punished. The Administration of Justice Act was passed so that they could shut down the bay and punish people for riots.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    The Quebec Act was passed to claim the 13 colonies back to the colonists. It stated that the British citizens could remain in Quebec and keep their religion. It also stated that they could take Newfoundland and annex it and tax them. So even if some of the colonists lived in Quebec they still would have to pay taxes, but could keep their religion.
