The Alchemist

  • The Dream

While sleeping in an abandoned church, Santiago has a dream that he'd had once before that involved him finding a treasure in Egypt. This prompted him to go see a gypsy about it and try to figure out if it meant anything.
  • The King

Santiago meets The King of Salem who helps him take the first step towards pursuing his "Personal Legend." He teaches him of omens and tells Santiago of others "Personal Legends" and how he helps those reach them.
  • Africa

Santiago makes it to Africa and finds there is virtually no one there that speaks the same language nor do they understand him. While only being there for a short period of time, Santiago meets a young boy who promises to help him, but in the end steals all of his money and runs.
  • The Merchant

In order to get back to Spain and get his flock of sheep back, Santiago agrees to work for a crystal merchant for the time being. While there, Santiago learns the language of the world and learns that others pursue their "Personal Legends" in their own way. In the merchants' case, he preferred to stay and hope for his dream rather than to carry it out like Santiago.
  • The Englishman

Once Santiago makes enough money at the crystal shop, he embarks on his journey once more and makes it into a caravan with an English man who was looking for an Alchemist. The Englishman and himself become friends and try to teach each other the things that the other does not know. The Englishman has his books of Alchemy, and Santiago has this knowledge of viewing the world and its soul.
  • The Oasis

After reaching the oasis, Santiago has a vision of an army attacking which he then tells the officials about. Because he was able to warn them, they name him counselor of the community.
  • Fatima

At the oasis, Santiago meets a girl while asking various people if they know fo the Alchemist. He ends up falling in love with her and asks her to marry him within the first few days of knowing her (wow, what a Romeo). She also admits that she loves him.
  • The Alchemist

The Alchemist takes Santiago under his wing and teaches him what he needs to know of his "Personal Legend." The Alchemist tells him that in order to pursue it, he would need to leave Fatima and Satiago has an internal dilema on whether or not he should go and leave her.
  • Wind

A military camp takes the Alchemist and Santiago and gives them three days to prove that Santiago can turn into the wind, and in turn, they will let them go. Santiago has no knowledge of how to do this, but after speaking to the souls of the desert, sun, and even the wind itself, he manages to do it.
  • Monk

The Alchemist brings Santiago to a monk's home, where he shows him that he can really turn any metal into gold. He hands a sliver of the gold to Santiago and sends him alone to the Pyramids to finish his journey to the treasure.
  • Pyramids

Santiago reaches the Pyramids and begins to dig where he spots the good omen of a scarab beetle. However, he wasn't able to find anything. Eventually, a few people show up and beat him up for they believed he was burying something. One of them tells Santiago of a recurring dream that he'd had of a treasure in an old abandoned church.
  • The Church

Santiago makes the journey back to the church that he was at at the beginning of his adventure with the help of the monk. Once there, he begins to dig and finds a chest full of Spanish coins. Once he's uncovered the whole thing, he decided to go back to Fatima.
