    American Settleres move to Texas
    Around September 10th the year of 1810 a priest named father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla held a rebellion with over 80,000 poor people of India and Mexican ancestry. They hoped that doing this would make Mexico Independent from the Spanish monarchy and that this would make there lives better.

    Even though what Texas was doing made Mexico upset, they still had settlements in other areas of the Present-Day southwest to govern. New Mexico was one of the oldest settled areas with its capital at Santa Fe. Mexico had control over present-day Arizona, Nevada, and California. Even though most of the Missions had dominated much of the present day Southwest, overtime it became less and less important. California still had missions that remained on the focus of everyday life.

    On October 6th the year of 1835 the Spanish army attempted to take away a cannon from the small town Gonzales, Texas. The people of Texas stood next to the cannon,They held a flag so it was almost like a protest, the flag read "Come and take it". In the next battle they had, the rebels one! This war is now called The Texas War for Independence.

    What Texas was doing angered Santa Anna, they began to assemble a force of over a thousand people to stop the rebellion. A very angry group of of the Texas army volunteers had been arguing back and forth with The Mexican Troops for months and months. A man named Colonel Jim Travis a small force took took the town of San Antonio. The rebels, numbering less than 200 people hoped to stall the Large Mexican force meanwhile a much larger Texas Army was being assembled. This ended two weeks later.

    On March 2nd 1836, the State of Texas declared their Independence against Mexico. The new self owned republic of Texas was born, the declaration and the constitution that shortly came after were modeled towards U.S. documents. Now slavery became legal :(
  • Battle of San Jacinto

    Battle of San Jacinto
    Santa Anna finally chased out the not yet trained forces from Sam Houston, outnumbered the texans decided to go east. They eventually realized and they reorganized at the San Jacinto River, this river was located by Galveston Bay. While they were there, they took a stand. Santa Anna was very confident of there victory, but just didnt care on a site for his camp.The afternoon of April 21st 1836 while Mexican troops were still resting Houston's forces swapped the camp saying "Remember the Alamo"

    The hero of the new found Independant Nation named Texas was Sam Houston. The Republic had created a new town named Houston and named it the Capital. The people of this Republic better known as the voters elected Sam Houston as the new president. Stephen F. Austin became Secretary of State. Since Texas wanted to increase population they offered Land Grants. Often times American settlers came in from nearby southern states and brought in slaves to help grow crops like cotton

    The President Polk quickly set out to make his campaign promise to annex Oregon and Texas. By the time the 1820's came around Russia and Spain had given up all there claims to the Oregon Country. Also Britain and the United States had agreed to occupy the new territory together!

    Manifest Destiny was the time period where America wanted to spread West. They wanted to spread West because they believed that id they did move west then they could build a new better society founded on democratic principles, because of these choices the United States had a booming economy and population. So from what I understand about Manifest Destiny is that it means the fate of like the plan to move West and expand to make a larger United States.

    At the begging of the war The United States had much more advanced weapons and equipment. Although the War was greatly outnumbered and poorly prepared United STates still had advanced stuff to go to war with. The government had put a call out for 50,00 or more volunteers however only about 20,000 people answered. While the Americans debated against the war, they still fought. They were worried about the spread of slavery into southwestern lands.
  • The end of the War

    The end of the War
    In Mexico General Taylor finally got the reinforcements he needed. He took his forces deeper into the enemy lands. Santa Anna, thrown from office after loosing to Texas, returned to power in Mexico in September 1846. Quickly, he came after Taylor. The two enemies clashes at Buena Vista in February 1847. Taylor won and continued his success made him a war hero back home.
