    Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus, an Italian sailer, thought he could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain gave him three ships, The Niña, The Pinta, and The Santa María. Columbus set sail on August 3, 1492. On October 12 they reached a land now known as the Bahamas. He named the land San Salvador. Columbus thought he was in the Indies. So he called the people he met Indians. Europeans later realized Columbus actually landed near North America.
