  • Tensions between Texas and Mexico

    Stephen Austin immigrated 1,500 citizens to Texas territory. Mexico was upset because they did not like that the Americans did not adopt the Mexican customs.
  • Battle of Gonzales

    Battle of Gonzales
    Stephen Austin persuaded the Mexican president to agree to several demands, and was arrested on his way home. He was released when when the president turned into a dictator. Texas created an army and went to a military post in Gonzales. Mexican soldiers ordered Texans to surrender. They retreated and the Texas army drove the Mexican army out.
  • The Alamo

    The Alamo
    Sam Houston was the leader of the Texas rebels. Santa Anna's army found Texas rebels in an abandoned church called The Alamo. The rebels decided to delay Santa Anna's army to create more time for Sam Houston's army to prepare. The rebels held off Santa Anna's force for 13 days until they attacked the Alamo. They fought off Santa Anna's army for 6 hours before being defeated.
  • Declared Independence

    Texas declared its independence against Mexico, and created a new constitution that protected slavery.
  • Battle of Goliad

    Two weeks after the Mexican army attacked the Alamo Santa Anna's force ganged up on Texas troops in Goliad. The troops surrendered hoping Mexicans would flee Texas. Instead Santa Anna's troops executed 300 men.
  • Battle of San Jacinto and the Treaty of Velasco

    Santa Anna did not think of Houston's army as a treat any more so he allowed his soldiers to sleep in the afternoon. Houston found this as a perfect time to attack. They were shielded by a hill, so Houston's troops snuck up on Santa Anna's troops and attacked them. Hundreds of Santa Anna's soldiers were killed and 700 were captured. Santa Anna was also held captive and Houston forced him to sign a treaty for the independence of the state of Texas and to force Santa Anna's army out.
  • The Republic of Texas

    The Republic of Texas
    Texas is now independent. Sam Houston was elected to become president and the citizens voted on Texas becoming part of the United States.
  • Texas Annexation

    The north did not want Texas to become part of the United States because they did not like that Texas was a slave state. On Andrew Jacksons last day of being president he finally recognized Texas as an independent nation.
