  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    In December 1825, about 3,000 Russian officers and soldiers protested against Nicholas I's becoming Czar. Because this happened in December, the rebels were called the Decembrists. They wanted Nicholas's brother Constantine to be Czar instead. The Decembrists were defeated and put on trial, where 5 were executed, 31 were sent to prison and the rest were exiled to Siberia.

    Nicholas II becomes czar of Russia
    Nicholas II inherited the Russian throne when his father, Alexander III, died on October 20, 1894 of kidney disease. He was offically crowned czar of Russia in 1895 in a public celebration near Moscow. Thousands of people were trampled to death during the coronation, which Nichoas was not aware of. So when he and his wife Alexandra celebrated with a ball it made a poor impression on the new subjects.

    The Russo-Japaense War
    Russia and Japan fought for control over the region of Manchuria and Korea during 1904-1905. Russia wanted a warm water port on the Pacific Ocean, for their navy and for trade. Japan did not want Russia to expand into their territory. Russia lost most battles, especially the seige of Port Arthur where the Russian commander surrendered the port to the Japanese without chekcing with his officers and while they still had three months of supplies and ammunition.

  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    On January 22, 1905, a group of workers led by a radical priest named Georgy Apollonovich Gapon marched to the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg to protest for change. Imperial forces opened fire on the demonstrators, killing and wounding hundreds. This became known as Bloody Sunday.

    World War I
    Russia began World War I with the largest army in the world at the time. Their leadarship was filled with corruption and incompetance and led to many problems. The war strained the resources and economy and made people even more upset with the way the governemnt was running things. When the Czarina was left in charge after Nicholas went to the front, things got worse, and revolts increased until NIcholas was forced to return and was forced to abdicate the throne.

    March Revolution
    The March Revolution was considered the first Russian revolution of 1917. The huge losses of Russian tropps and battles in World War I had made the people doubt Russia was a capable militray power. Food and fuel shortages led to riots, which Nicholas II ordered the soldiers to put a stop to. Instead the soldiers joined the revolution. Nicholas was forced to abdicate and a temporary goverment was set up called the Provisional Government.

    Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne
    Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate his throne when he attempted to return from the front lines to deal with revolutionaries in Russia. His train wwas stopped by rebel workers and he was met by delegates of the new provisional government. He agreed to abdicate his throne.

    The Russian Civil War begins
    The Russain Civil war lasted until 1922. After the Provisional Governement ended and the Bolsheviks gained control of the government, they had to fight many differnt groups who also wanted power or did not agree with them as rulers.
  • The creation of the U.S.S.R

    The creation of the U.S.S.R
    The Treaty on the Creation of the USSR and the Declaration of the Creation of the USSR had been approved by the delegates of all four republics on December 30, 1922. The four were the Russian SFSR, the Transcaucasian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR and the Byelorussian SSR. Later other republics joined. This was the creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or Soviet Union.
  • Vladimir Lenin’s Death

    Vladimir Lenin’s Death
    Vladimir Lennin died on January 21, 1924 of a brain hemorrhage. He was the founder of the Bolshevik party and the Bolsheviks took over Russia by 1920. Lenin became the leader of the USSR until his death. Then Joseph Stalin took over as leader.
