Ten Important Events That Occured Between 1930 and 1941

  • Empire State Building Opens in New York

    When the Empire State Building opened on May 1, 1931, it was the tallest building in the world - standing at 1,250 feet tall.President Herbert Hoover pressed a button in Washington, D.C., and on came the lights in the world's tallest skyscraper. The building held the record for 40 years.
  • Japan Invades Manchuria & Commits the Rape of Nanking(1937)

    The Japanese invade a mineral rich territory of China, Manchuria. Japan then moves towards the capital of China in hopes to gain more land and ensure a strong empire in Southeast Asia. Upon arrivial, Japanese soldiers destroyed the city of Nanking, China's capital at the time. Much of the city was burned, and Japanese troops launched a campaign of cruelty against civilians. In the Rape of Nanking, 200,000 males were butchered, and at least of 20,000 woman and children of all ages were raped.
  • FDR wins the Presidential election

    Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a democrat from New York, defeats President Herbert Hoover in the election for the presidency, becoming Americas 32nd President. In his first 100 days in office, Roosevelt launches the New Deal including dozens of federal programs to help create employeement in America.
  • Adolf Hitler Becomes Chancellor of Germany

    January 30th, 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg names Adolf Hitler, leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, better known as the Nazi Party, as chancellor of Germany. Hitler's emergence as chancellor marked a crucial turning point for Germany and, ultimately, for the world. Germany soon after, withdrawls from the League of Nations.
  • Jessse Ownes and the 1936 Olympics

    At the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Jesse Owens, wins four gold medals and breaks Olympic and world records, but German dictator Aldoph Hitler refuses to recognize the American's achievements. Hitler had planned to express his extreme form of nationalism and declared that the superior German Aryan race would dominate the games. However, Hitler was proven wrong.
  • The Munich Conference

    The Munich Agreement was a settlement permitting Nazi Germany's annexation of the Sudetenland. The agreement was negotiated at a conference held in Munich, Germany, among the major powers of Europe without the presence of Czechoslovakia.The agreement was an appeasement and strengthen Hitler's belief that he wouldn't have much resistence when taking over all of Europe.
  • The Non-Agression Pact of 1939 and the Invasion of Poland.

    To avoid war, Russia and Germany signed the Non-Aggression Pact of 1939 which allowed Germany to invade Poland. If Russia was in aggreement, the country would recieve half of the newly acquired territory. The invasion of Poland on September 1st,1939 officially began WW2. Great Britain and France declared war on the Axis Powers 2 days later.
  • France Falls and Germany Moves on to Britain

    On May 20th, 1940 German trapped the British, who now made for Dunkirk in an evacuation plan known as ‘Operation Dynamo’. On 5 June, the French resistance finally collapsed, although not without heavy fighting. The French government surrendered on 25 June, just seven weeks after the beginning of the invasion.   • The Lend-Lease Act of 1941

    The Lend-Lease Act of 1941, enacted by Congress, empowered President Roosevelt to sell, transfer, lend, or lease war supplies—such as equipment, food, and weapons—to American allies during World War Two.
  • Pearl Harbor

    December 7th, 1941, Japan attacks naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to weaken American forces in the Pacific and ensure expansion in southeast Asia. Over 2,3000 Americans were killed and a thousand others injured. Pearl harbor officially brought America into World War Two to combat with the Axis Powers.
