  • General Lee Surrenders

    General Lee Surrenders
    This picture (by Thomas Nast) shows General Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia, marking the end of the Civil War and thus the Confederate States of America, with whom America had been at war with for several years. According to the surrender document, all of those who had fought for the Confederacy would be pardoned by the United States. Southerners would also keep their private property.
  • Treaty of Washington With British Empire

    After the Confederacy’s defeat in 1865, the United States demanded that Great Britain pay reparations for helping the Confederacy during the war. In 1871, the treaty was finally signed. The treaty included an admission of being in the wrong by Britain and an agreement to follow three international laws.
  • Statue of Liberty Arrives in New York

    In order to honor France’s friendship with the United States, France constructed the Statue of Liberty. It was met with great excitement in New York. The statue was unveiled in 1996.
  • The Wounded Knee Massacre

    The Wounded Knee Massacre was the last major interaction between the United States and the Sioux Nation. 300-350 Native Americans were killed, including women and children. Those who survived were forced onto Pine Ridge Reservation.

    The War of 1898

    The War of 1898 started in May and was between the United States and Spain. The Treaty of Paris marked the end of it in December 1898, where Spain accepted defeat. Spain began to focus more on domestic needs, whereas the United States became a world power and lead to play determining roles in the world.

  • United States joins WWI

    America officially entered the war on April 6th, 1917. It was only the 4th time Congress declared war, and it led to a draft that inducted 2.8 million men. When the war concluded in 1918, more than 2 million troops served in Europe and more than 50,000 of them died.

    The Spanish Flu

    The Spanish Flu was the most severe pandemic in recent history, as it infected about 40% of the global population - 20-50 million died. More than 17 million during the war. While called the Spanish Flu, it didn’t originate there. Other countries were in media blackout while Spain kept updated on the virus.

    Considered to be the worst economic event in world history it began on October 24, 1929, with investors trading a record 12.9 million shares. A few days later was known as “Black Monday,” the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged nearly 13 percent.
  • Congress Passed the New Deal

    The New Deal was a set of wide ranged relief, recovery, and reform legislations created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that helped to fix what happened with the Great Depression.
  • National Labor Relation Act

    The National Labor Relations Act, was also known as the Wagner Act, created the National Labor Relations Board to supervise elections and prevent businesses from treating their workers unfairly.

    Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor
    Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the United States entered World War II. The war effort stimulated American industry and, as a result, effectively ended the Great Depression.
