Student body begins to transform into more spirited, involved individuals who are accepting of Stargirl. -
And Then Change Even More
Student body begins to resent Stargirl for having such a caring heart for everyone she meets, including the opposing basketball team or a family that she doesn’t know who has lost a loved one. -

Conformists believe she is betraying the larger “group.” Stargirl views everyone as individuals, not as part of a group. -
The School Refuses To Accept Stargirl
The student body feels threatened by Stargirl’s behavior, as if she is attacking their conformity. -
Even Leo Is Not Accepted
Leo is torn between the group and the individual when he engages in a relationship with Stargirl. The student body shuns him as well. -
Leo Tries To Change Startgirl
Leo tries to get Stargirl to conform, but it fails and she gives up. -
The Break-up
Leo cannot find the courage to be an individual, so he & Stargirl break up. -
Leo Changes
In the end, Leo becomes an individual and appreciates Stargirl’s impact on his life. Leaves the reader with a sense that they too should be themselves.
