    The battle of Verdun was the longest battle of wwi. Verdun was attacked becuse the Germans knew that the French would fight to the last man, making the French bleed white. Flamethrowers were used for the first time in large numbers to help the Germans advance and achieve the taking of Verdun.

Immediately after the German gas attack at Ypres, France and Britain began developing their own chemical weapons and gas masks.

Of the 22 that did, a further 7 failed to work at zero hour. Thus 15 of the 49 tanks rolled slowly into No Man's Land with the start of the attack on 15 September.

    On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson went before a joint session of Congress to request a declaration of war against Germany. Wilson cited Germany’s violation of its pledge to suspend unrestricted submarine warfare in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, as well as its attempts to entice Mexico into an alliance against the United States, as his reasons for declaring war. On April 4, 1917, the U.S. Senate voted in support of the measure to declare war on Germany
