  • White Primary Ends

    The White Primary Kept African-American citizens from voting. The Supreme Court ruled against this unfair act in the King v Chapman case.
  • 3 Governors Controversy

    This was a struggle for the position of governor after Eugene Talmadge died. His son was on the ballot of many, while another opponent named Melvin Thompson was the lieutenant governor. To add to this, the outgoing governor decided not to leave. The supreme court later chose Thompson who aided the civil rights movement.
  • Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers

    He is the first to break the color barrier in major league baseball. He inspires many.
  • Armed Forces Integration

    Pres. Truman declared an executive order requiring integration of races in the armed forces.
  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    The Supreme Court ruled in a long awaited case that separate schools are by nature unequal. The were ordered to desegregate "with all deliberate speed".

    Rosa Parks Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Organized by Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks sits-in on a bus whilst she takes up a supposed "white persons" seat. This caused the bus boycott that sparked most other protests.
  • Brewer Assassination

    The KKK had been threatening Thomas Brewer and soon he was found dead. His role and influence using the NAACP was ruined.
  • Georgia Flag Change of 1956

    After sparking debate, the flag was changed to showcase the heritage of the south. Instead, it was perceived as an act of defiance because it included elements of the confederate flag.
  • Little Rock and School Desegregation

    National Guard troops showed up to prevent black children from going to school after the school board voted to integrate the schools. 1000 troops are assigned and the governor responded by closing schools for that year.
  • The Sibley Commission

    After the governor decided not to handle the Brown v B.O.E he passed the issue off to the legislature. John Sibley was put in charge of a committee whose aim was to figure out what the people wanted. They found that 6/10 of the population would rather have closed schools. The governor doesn't do that, but instead slows the desegregation process as much as possible.
  • Albany Movement

    The protests in other places sparked an interest in Albany protesters. They decided to protest but announce that they were going to do it before. They were all jailed and their leader was too. Without a leader, the movement dissolved.
  • UGA Integrated

    The University of Georgia was integrated due to a court ruling that forcibly allowed two students to attend. The two students-Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter-sparked debate which caused Georgia officials to drop funds. Many people got outraged and claimed the school would shut down. A mob also formed outside and caused the school to pay even more for property damage. Later, the legislature repealed the laws preventing funding to integrated schools.
  • Civil Rights Act

    A law was passed that disallowed bias in areas of age, sex, race, or national origin for labor purposes and ended segregation in public places. The Current Governor Lester Maddox publicly hated on it.
  • Voting Rights Act Passed

    Lyndon B. Johnson signed off on an act that prohibited any voting discrimination towards women and African-Americans.
  • The Summerhill Race Riot In Atlanta

    Fake News about African-Americans committing crimes surfaced causing outrage that lasted four days. A group of White racists believed it and wanted to fight. They killed one person and injured twenty others.
  • Martin Luther King Assassinated

    He was shot in Memphis by James Earl Ray while supporting a sanitation worker strike. This resulted in over 120 cities with riots.
  • Integration of Georgia's schools

    All schools in Georgia were desegregated
