    British begin bombing Germany

    Battle of Midway Pulls US's assets out of Europe

    Jun4-7: The battle of midway effectively destroyed Japan's naval strength when the Americans destroyed four of its aircraft carriers. Japan eventually recovered. Japan then attacked the US west coast, causing the US to divert military assets away from Europe, thereby lengthening the war in the European Theatre, and allowing Germany to Prevail.

  • Germans attack South Russia

    Germany, along with Axis allies, began a second offensive against the Soviet Union after crossing the Donets river. This would later lead to the Germans surrendering in Russia.

  • Rostov captured by the Germans

    The Germans 1st Panzer Army captures Rostov 250 miles into their second Russian offensive. Hitler then chose to split his army into two, hoping to make more progress. Later this proved to be a bad decision as it lead to him not having enough resources.

    Battle of El Alamein

    Axis launch a two-prong attack against El Alamein. Eventually General Erwin Rommel (German) begins a retreat and the Allies are successful. This event was a turning point for the Allies in Africa. The Axis powers did not gain control of any part of Africa after the battle of El Alamein.

    During their counter-attack against the Germans, the Soviets finally regain the last of their airports. This leaves the Germans without a way to receive supplies.

    The last of the German troops surrender in the Soviet Union. Only 90,000 German troops were left alive, and they went to prisoner of war camps. Only 5000 survived until the end of the war.
