    The four caliphs began when Muhammad died. The spread of the Islamic religion started in the Arabian Peninsula.

    Abu Bakr was a friend and follower of Muhammad, and a well known representative of Islamic religion. He lead several other individuals to follow the Islamic religion, too. His period ended in 634.

    Sunni and Shi’a Split
    Muhammad was a uniting link between all cultures that followed the Islamic relgion, and when he passed, eveyone burst at the seams with their own opinons and views of the relgion, resulting in the split of the two biggest contributing groups to the religion.

    Umar was a member of the Qureysh tribe. He was impressed by the strength of those who followed the Muslim religion. His period ended in 644.

    The Umayyad Empire
    The Umayyad Empire was ruled by the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, and was founded after a civil war. The government was strongly based around political happenings. There wre four parts of the social structure were Muslim Arabs, Muslim non-Arabs, Non-Muslim free persons, then slaves. This empire fell in 1031 due to the Fitna of al-Ándalus.

    The Coast of East Africa
    At this point, Islam had made it's way well into Northern Africa. The introduction of Islam further evovled Sudan as a civilization and made them a more urbanized location. The spread of Islam wasn't one big sweeping hand of a new religion, it happened in waves. They started to develop mosques in Africa, and more and more people started attending them for worship. All in all, the spread of Islam wasn't always swift, but it was successful.

    The Sudanic empires of Western Africa were a group of powerful states that developed south of the Sahara Dessert between the A.D. 700s and 1500s. One of the most prominant state was Mali. Fishing, Agriculture, and cattle were a big part of the economy

    The Abbasid Dynasty was founded by Muhammad's youngest uncle, Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. It overthrown the Umayyad dynasty during 750 CE.

    Islam in North Africa
    The first Muslim invasion lasted until the Ottoman Empire. The invasion made it difficult for North Africa to maintain a stable government. As the Islamic religion spread through North Africa, reaching new lengths, it evolved everywhere it went. It wasn't exactly the same in each place. The whole invasion began with one trade route.

    The Sultanate Period
    This was located in South Asia. The first Muslim invasions occured when Islams settled near Banbhore. The settling of Islamic people increased their relgious beliefs and trade networks. Muslims conquered the subcontinent of India. Over time, due to the presence of Islamic people, the Indian subcontinenet slowly started ot convert to the Muslim religion. The Hindu people didn't like the presence of Muslims, they had thier own religion, and they were being shown a new religion.
  • The Spread of Islam in Southeast Asia

    The spread of trade in the among West Asia, India and Southeast Asia helped the spread of Islam from Muslim merchants who brought the apread of the religion to the region.
