Brown V. Board of Education
banned segregation from schools, was an attempt to correct the unfortunate inequalities that have existed since our country was founded centuries ago. Brown consolidated five cases brought in various states across the country, challenging the exclusion of African American children from schools attended by white children in the same district. -
Mills V. The Board of Education
Expanded the impact of the P.A.R.C. case beyond children with developmental disabilities. The plaintiffs sought an injunction on the grounds that they had been denied their constitutional right due process. -
P.A.R.C. v. Pennsylvania
A class action suit against the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in Federal District Court. The state was ignoring the education of disabled students. -
Rehabilitation Act of 1973
SEC. 504- No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States, shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity conducted by the United States Postal Service. -
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
Gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
Passed in 1975, this act provided support to state special education programs to provide free appropriate public education to disabled children. -
Perkins Act
This act required that ten percent of federal funding for vocational education must support the education of disabled students -
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
This major piece of legislation set forth broad prohibitions against discrimination of disabled individuals by most employers, public agencies, and those who provide public accommodations. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
This act amended the EAHCA by modifying a number of the provisions in the original statute. The IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education, and related services to more then 6.5 million eligible infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities. -
