    Soviets launch Sputnik I
    The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957 in Baikonur Cosmodrome. Sputnik was the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth. Sputnik was launched on a huge rocket and orbited Earth at 29,000 kilometer per hour. The effect of Sputnik was to accelerate space and weapons programs. Sputnik also marked the start of the space age and the space race, which later on led to the creation of NASA.
