The Soviet union (or USSR) launched it's first satellite into space, which shocked americans, they believed if they could launch satellites into space they could also launch nuclear weapons. Many americans wanted the U.S. to be the first to reach this scientific height first. With this satellite being launched so began the space race. -

Apollo 11 is when we got astronauts on the moon Neil Armstrong and Bull Aldrin and one more astronaut Michael Collins but he stayed back on the space craft. Apollo 11 landed in the pacific ocean about 1,400 km (900 miles) west of Hawaii on July 24.
