Space exploration

  • First spotting of the moon through a telescope

First spotting of the moon through a telescope
In 1609, The first spotting of the moon through a telescope by Galileo Galilei. Galileo galilei spotted the moon. This allowed us to study the moon in more detail.
  • Liquid fuel

    Liquid fuel
In 1926, Robert H. Goddard launches first liquid fueled rockets. This was important because we were able to expand on this and be able to create rockets more fuel efficient to be able to go into space and back.
  • Soviet Union launches their first rocket

In 1933, Soviet Union launches first rocket of their own. By them launching their first rocket that started the space race between the US and the Soviet Union. Because of this we were able to go to the moon sooner because of the competition between the US and the Soviet Union
  • First artificial satellite

    First artificial satellite
In 1957, the first artificial satellite put into space that brings back signals to earth launched by the USSR. This event gave us more information about earth's atmosphere and things that were going on with earth.
  • First animal into space

    First animal into space
In 1957, first animal launched into orbit, dog named Laika launched by USSR and did not return alive. This was done to see if living creatures could survive without suits in space. From this we learned that we needed to create a suit that would protect us and give us oxygen.
  • Solar wind

In 1959, first detection of solar wind by USSR. This was important because then we started to study the sun and understand more how it works and the things that it creates like solar wind, solar flares.
  • First plants and animals to survive

First plants and animals to survive
In 1960, the first plants and animals returned to earth safely/alive from the Earth's orbit. This was very important because we knew that we could send humans into space and bring them back alive.
  • First manned space flight

    First manned space flight
In 1961, the first human space flight and human manned orbital flight. This was important because we were now successfully able to have a man fly a rocket into space to get more information and bring that back.
  • Apollo 11

    Apollo 11
In 1969, the first human on moon by the U.S. (Apollo 11) was a success. This was a very big moment in space history because by putting the first man on the moon we won the space race. They were able to collect samples of the moon and bring them back for more study.
  • First Space station

    First Space station
In 1971, the first space station in space by USSR. This made it possible for astronauts to stay out in space for longer periods of time and gather information about space.
  • Space shuttle challenger tragedy

In 1986, the space shuttle Challenger tragedy. This was when they sent the first civilian up into space to teach students but it crashed on it's way up killing everyone.
  • Hubble

    Hubble
In 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched. The Hubble Telescope is important because it was the first space telescope to take a photo of the whole solar system. It's also important because it gets a lot of information from things in space.
  • Studying the sun

In 1992, the first polar orbit around the sun happened. We were able to get closer to the sun to study it even more.
  • First asteroid

    First asteroid
In 2010, the first sample of an asteroid was brought back to earth by Japan. This was important because we got to learn more about asteroids and what they're made of.
  • Mars

    Mars
In 2012, a rover from NASA successfully landed on Mars to seek out life clues. This was a big thing to see if there was life on Mars and to see if life could exist on Mars.
